Oakland Athletics
It has not been all that smooth of a start to the season for the Athletics. That was expected, though.
It was universally accepted that it was going to be a down year for this squad. Given the players they lost and the current players they have, it would be a very tall task for them to be even a little bit competitive.
Because they are not a big market team, they do not have the luxury of going out there and paying for a lot of talent and the same goes for paying the guys they already had. No longer having people like Olson and Manaea on your roster are clearly a big loss but they did not feel it was realistic monetarily for the future.
Given how tough the American League is, I have a very hard time seeing Oakland keeping up with too many teams. There are a lot of teams that are loaded with talent on both sides of the field and they certainly are not one of them.
And if you forgot about the league and just focus on their division, the AL West is no picnic. Seattle and Houston are legit teams and it looks like the Angels are better than they have been in past years. It is hard to envision winning that division crown anywhere in the near future.
The A’s got swept by the Minnesota Twins over the weekend in three games and lost the finale of the series by a score of 4-3. Every one of the games was a one-run decision but they still were not able to get the job done when it mattered.
Daulton Jefferies went 5 innings and allowed 4 earned runs in the loss to Minnesota. He at least kept his team in the game but the offense really did not step up the way they would have wished.
Paul Blackburn is next up in the rotation for this club and he has looked good so far in a year that has not been good for the A’s. He is 3-0 with an ERA of 2.22.
Detroit Tigers
Just like with the A’s, the Tigers have gotten off to quite the bumpy start. If they do not figure things out real quick, this season is going to drag on for them.
One difference between this team and Oakland is that they had expectations coming into the season. Considering the players they added to go along with their manager, there were reasonable expectations out there that Detroit would at least be competitive in the AL and maybe be a playoff team.
Right now, they just cannot seem to get out of their own way. I know they are not the most talented team out there but they should have a better record than they presently do.
This squad has a record of 8-19 and they are 5th in the AL Central. When you are last in that division, it is pretty clear that things are not going your way.
Depending on the day, a certain part of their game is not very good. There have been many games where the pitching has not done its job and the same goes for the offense. Either way, they have not been consistent enough on either side and that is why they are where they are.
Detroit just got swept by the Houston Astros in four games which had to be frustrating. I get that their opponent was the better team in that series but they should have been able to take at least one from them.
Wily Peralta started the game on Sunday and did not allow an earned run but that quickly changed when the bullpen game in. Drew Hutchinson allowed 4 earned runs and Joe Jimenez allowed 1. It also did not help that the offense decided to totally go to sleep.
The Tigers will turn to Michael Pineda in this one and he really needs to get his team back on track. If they can not figure a way to beat this team, maybe they are worse than we think.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Athletics are 2-5 in their last Monday games.
- The Athletics are 7-19 in their last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Tigers are 18-38 in their last 56 Monday games.
- The Tigers are 7-19 in their last 26 games.
Oakland Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers MLB Prediction:
The Tigers looked pretty bad in their last series with the Astros but they have a chance to get back on track here with the Athletics.
Even though Oakland is not a great team here that does not mean this will be easy for Detroit. It is not as if they have been lighting the world on fire, either.
I can see this being a close one throughout but the Tigers doing enough to get the win. Although Pineda is not the same guy he once was, I trust him here to put forth a solid effort and give his team a chance to get the W.
The juice is not too high here so I will go with the Tigers on the ML.
