Oakland Athletics

Oakland’s pythagorean win/loss record suggests that its been a little lucky in the first half, but nothing crazy either. The A’s have won a lot lately with some blowout losses in between, which might explain some of the discrepancy.

The A’s have won eight of their last nine games with a 15–3 loss to Cleveland being the only defeat. They lost two of three between that stretch and a five-game winning streak, which makes them 14–3 over their last 17 games.

So why aren’t they getting more attention? For one, the Houston Astros are still 8.5 games up because they hardly ever lose. The Mariners are still sizzling hot, too. They are just 1.5 back of Houston, which makes it feel like Oakland is still way out of it.

But the M’s won’t stay this hot for much longer. Oakland may not either, but I have a feeling those two are going to tussle at some point later in the summer. And it may just be for the final playoff spot in the American League.

Paul Blackburn has struggled after a great rookie season. He pitched into the seventh inning for the first time all year in his last start, however. He gave up three hits and a walk while keeping the Indians off the board. The second time around is usually tougher.

Cleveland Indians

Welcome back, Carlos Carrasco. The man who would be an ace for a lot of clubs returns to a Cleveland rotation that is pretty darn good without him.

That’s not a knock on Carrasco; it’s praise for Kluber, Bauer, Clevinger and company, who have held down the fort since mid-June when Carrasco got hit with a line drive on the elbow and left the game.

The Venezuelan who has never been an all-star, a streak that will continue this season because of the injury, threw four shutout innings in a minor league rehab start and says he’s good to go on Friday.

The Indians swept the Royals this week and have an 11.5-game lead in the division, despite having the same number of wins as Oakland.
