The A’s and Guardians will be facing off for the second game of their series.
Paul Blackburn and Triston McKenzie are the starters in this ball game.
Cleveland is laying a pretty heavy price at home here. That is not too surprising given the team they are facing.
Oakland Athletics
This year has not been fun for the A’s. It is hard to find too many positive things that are associated with them.
Unless people were totally blind to the reality, it was understood that this season was not one to expect a whole lot from Oakland. It was a foregone conclusion that the 2022 season was not going to be a successful one for them in terms of wins and losses.
Just based on their pre-season over/under win total, it was understood that the expectations were not too high for this club. How could they be with this group, though?
As I look at this team, there are a lot of holes. Yes, that is part of being in a transition phase but boy, do they have an awful lot of work to do if they want to be relevant again.
If you are Oakland, you have better hope that the people in your pipeline can amount to something soon because that appears to be their only real hope of being good again. Given the kind of market this team is, it is very unlikely that they will go out there and spend top dollar to bring in top talent.
If I had enough time, I could go chapter in verse in the areas in which they need to improve but I will keep it real simple. The lack of pitching depth is apparent, the lineup is below average, and the front office is not exactly one to trust. People can say all they want about “less is more” but let us not forget that the Oakland method has not exactly made them a perennial contender.
After dropping two games to the Braves in their recent series, the A’s will look to get back on track with Cleveland. At this point, it is not too reasonable to expect them to beat anyone.
Paul Blackburn will be getting the ball in game 2 and he has been a lone bright spot for this team. He is currently 5-2 with an ERA of 2.62.
Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians have not set the world on fire this season but they have been respectable and have been playing some better ball as of late.
There is no question that they are a limited team but that does not mean they cannot have at least some success. It will not get them to a championship this season but it is very reasonable that they end up being better than what the popular opinion was.
Something that I feel is crucial for Cleveland is to take advantage of a division that is not very strong and is winnable.
Going into the season, it was thought that it would be Minnesota and Chicago competing for the Central. Given the fact that the Sox have not played great and Minnesota is not a total threat, there should be no reason for the Tribe to feel like they cannot finish in 1st by the end of the season.
At the moment, Cleveland has a record of 26-26 and they trail the Twins by 4 games. It is certainly fair to say that those head-to-head matchups between these guys and Minnesota will likely loom large.
In their last series, the Guardians were able to win two of three from the Rangers. It would have been great for them to sweep the series but their main message right now needs to be on winning the series they are in.
Of course, nobody should be taking their opponent for granted but this series is one that Cleveland must do damage in. When facing off with one of the worst teams in the league, it is critical that a team takes care of their business.
Triston McKenzie will be getting the start in the middle game and he has seen mixed results in 2022. Regardless, a good chance for him to get into the win column will come on Friday evening.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The A’s are 19-42 in their last 61 games as an underdog.
- The A’s are 0-4 in their last 4 during game 2 of a series.
- The Guardians are 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Guardians are 40-19 in their last 59 games as a favorite.
Oakland Athletics vs. Cleveland Guardians MLB Prediction:
In terms of just being the better team, it is clearly Cleveland and I do feel they will get the job done.
With that said, I do have confidence in Oakland to keep things close on Friday. They have a pitcher on the mound who is more than capable and an offense that should be able to muster some runs against Cleveland.
For me, the 1.5 runs are too much to lay with the Guardians at home.
I like A’s on the Runline.
