New York Yankees
New York split a doubleheader with Philadelphia on Wednesday and will attempt to make it a decisive three out of four over the Phillies on Thursday before traveling to Tampa.
It won’t have a day off between all of this. Instead, the Yankees will play another four games in three days, this time at the Trop.
Masahiro Tanaka was not sharp in his first start of the season last weekend against Boston, when he allowed four hits, a walk and two runs (one earned) in less than three innings against the Red Sox.
But the Yankees have the bullpen and the bats to overcome a short outing by a starting pitcher and came back to win that game.
The combination of Zack Britton, Chad Green, Adam Ottavino and Jonathan Holder has thrown over 20 innings of shutout baseball so far this season.
Soon enough, Aroldis Chapman will join a bullpen that is already the best in the Major Leagues.
Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa will get Thursday off before hosting this series, which is a good thing because the Rays have not been playing well of late.
They were swept by the Orioles and only managed to split their last two games against the lowly Red Sox.
Four or five regulars, depending on exactly whom you include (all have at least 30 plate appearances), are hitting less than .200 so far this season.
The pitching hasn’t been as sparkling as it has been the last two seasons, either. That includes Fridays starter, Blake Snell, who has lasted just five innings in his first two starts, combined.
