The Yankees were the favorite and won, but the series opener was not the game many had anticipated.
Now Tampa has to bounce back to even the series against a team they dominated during the regular season.
New York Yankees
The Yankees won the opener. Gerrit Cole pitched well and it fees like they are going to have to win the game when he starts.
New York is healthy again and as powerful as ever. In the win, they hit four homers, including one each from the bottom two spots in the order. The first for the Yankees in a playoff game in their history.
In their three playoff wins, they have scored 12, 10 and 9 runs. If they keep up that level of production this series will be a snap as that is where they have their primary advantage
Deivi Garcia is just a rookie. The Yankees won four of his six starts but he has not been especially strong after being thrust into action. Tampa has never seen him though.
The Yankees bullpen did the job against Tampa. Cole gave up a few runs but they shut things down after that on the way to the win.
Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa has to be down after the loss. They were up 3-2 after four innings and once you give that team the lead it is usually in the bank.
Blake Snell was not nearly as effective as he was in his first playoff start. He could not avoid the long ball, giving up three homers. The bullpen mostly held up till the 9th when a Yankees grand slam put the game totally out of reach.
Tampa has the advantage on the mound for game two with Ty Glasnow, a monster righty who led the Majors in strikeout rate.
Glanow was very good against Toronto in the playoffs but has had mixed results against New York this season. He has made three starts against the Yankees this season (team record 2-1). Those results include his best outing and his worst outing of the year.
Tampa was selective in their relief arms yesterday so they have the guys they want to backup Glasnow, who has worked more than 6 innings just once all season.
