The Yankees will be in St. Louis to face off with the Cardinals on Saturday evening.
Domingo German will be facing Jordan Montgomery who will be making his first start with his new team and it happens to be against his old team.
In this spot, New York is a small favorite on the road. The total opened up at 7.5 and is now up to 8 in most spots I have checked.
New York Yankees
After not playing how they would have liked against the Mariners, the Yankees did not start off their series with the Cardinals how they would have liked with a 4-3 loss.
We all know how well the Bombers have played this season, but these types of losses have happened before and the way they have happened should make the fans and players frustrated.
It was another example of a game they were leading and could have won, but they did not execute in the late innings and it ended up costing them.
Nestor Cortes Jr. put forth a solid outing as he went 5.1 innings and allowed 1 hit and 2 earned runs while punching out 4 batters. He did issue 4 walks, however, which is a little concerning but I do not see it as something that keeps up.
When he left, relievers Albert Abreu and Scott Effross did what they had to do but Clay Holmes once again coughed up a lead and there are some people that are slowly beginning to lose their patience with him.
The right-hander allowed 2 hits and 2 earned runs in the 8th inning and that sealed the game for St. Louis. This guy has been quite good for the majority of the season but if these blown opportunities continue to pile up there is a chance he is no longer the closer when it really matters.
New York did have some success against starter Dakota Hudson, but they definitely could have done more against him and they did not do anything against the bullpen for the Cardinals.
Domingo German will be getting the start in the second game of the series and he has been better in his last two starts after he had that disastrous first start against the Astros. The ERA of 6.39 is clearly still much higher than he would like but it is lower than what it was just a little bit ago.
St. Louis Cardinals
The chances for the Cardinals to pull off the win on Friday did not seem all too high, but they were able to rally in the late innings and get the job done.
Dakota Hudson was not exactly sharp in the opener, but he was able to limit the damage that New York did while not having his best stuff.
The right-hander went 4 innings while allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs. There was a time in the game where it looked like it could have been worse, but the Yankees were not able to get the hit that really put the game out of reach for the Cards.
With Hudson out of the game, the combo of Andre Pallante and Ryan Heasley went 5 innings and did not allow an earned run. That is never an easy thing to do with this kind of lineup.
Paul DeJong came up big for this group in the 8th inning with a double that scored two runs with two outs against the best reliever for the Yankees. Both Nolan Arenado and Tyler O’Neill reached base in that inning to give him the chance to come up with the big hit.
If you looked at just the numbers of hits each team got, you would likely think the Yankees got the job done, but the Cardinals showed a lot of toughness and did not back away from a tricky and talented opponent.
It will definitely be interesting to see Montgomery get a chance to face off with his former team on Saturday. When the Yanks were making moves at the deadline, he was not a guy that I thought would be in the mix to get traded.
The lefty once again did not get the most run support this season but he has been solid in 2022 and will look to carry that over with his new ball club.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Yankees are 2-8 in their last 10 road games.
- The Yankees are 0-7 in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Cardinals are 6-0 in their last 6 home games.
- The Cardinals are 27-11 in their last 38 during game 2 of a series.
New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction:
This has not happened too many times this season, but I am not in love with the Yankees in this spot here.
As noted earlier, German has been better of late, but I am not totally sold on him being very effective against this lineup.
Montgomery clearly is going to have a tall task when facing his old team, but I can see him being solid and putting the game in the hands of the bullpen.
I like the Cardinals to take a close one at home in this game.
