New York Yankees
James Paxton wasn’t as sharp as many expected him to be against the second-worst offense in baseball on Friday but he still pitched into the sixth inning, struck out eight, and got the win in a 7–3 Yankee triumph.
The Bombers only hit one home run but knocked Madison Bumgarner around for eleven hits before he departed with two out in the sixth inning. DJ LaMahieu, Luke Voit, Gleyber Torres, and Gio Urshela (that’s the Yankees’ top four) all had multi-hit games and Voit hit the long ball in the win.

Both Tommy Kahnle and Zack Britton threw scoreless appearances in the win (though they only combined for three outs). Both guys disappointed a bit last season but have thirteen scoreless appearances between them, as of Saturday. All they are are middle relievers for New York’s bullpen, too.
San Francisco Giants
Dereck Rodriguez has never faced the Yankees. He’s only thrown 146 big league innings but he’s been fantastic since breaking onto the scene in May last year.
It wasn’t a straightforward route for Rodriguez, who was drafted by the Twins in 2011. He was an outfielder then and only started pitching professionally in 2014. The Twins let him go ahead of the 2018 season after playing professionally in Puerto Rico and competing in the Caribbean Series.

The Giants scooped him up and are glad they did. He’s posted a 133 ERA+ and 1.10 WHIP in those 146 innings since getting the call-up. The ERA is up just a bit this season but the walks are down and the strikeouts are up so there hasn’t been any sign of a sophomore slump yet.
Rodriguez is the son of Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, which does not seem to be widely known.
