The Yankees will continue their road trip as they head to Pittsburgh to start a series on Tuesday evening.
In this spot, the Pirates are a very big underdog at home. The total opened at 8.5 and has gone up to 9.
Jameson Taillon will be opposed by Jose Quintana in this one.
New York Yankees
It seems like it has been said for pretty much the whole season, but the Yankees are clearly the best team in baseball and they do not seem to be letting up anytime soon.
If this season is not Word Series or bust for them, I do not know what is. Given the kind of season they have had to this point and the number of games they are going to win, falling short simply would not be acceptable.
Based on their great record and the eye test, it is clear this is a special team, but they are not perfect. I think a lot of fans would like them to improve their team in some way at the deadline and if they did not, it wouldn’t exactly be a great look.
The bullpen has been outstanding and the rotation has also been very solid. Just based on that alone, they will continue to be in most of their game and win a lot of them.
As far as the offense goes, they have been productive in that area and they clearly have some great hitters, but there are also some holes and those have to be addressed. I do not necessarily see that catching up to them in the regular season, but it could definitely happen in the playoffs.
New York did get blanked on Sunday 2-0, but they still won the series with Cleveland, which was expected of them. They come into this series 6-4 in their last 10 and are in clear control of the AL East.
Their next two games with the Pirates are ones where they just have to get the job done. It is evident who the better team is and they need to put on that on full display.
Jameson Taillon will be getting the ball vs. his former team and he has been quite good this season. With some of the other guys on this staff, there are times when he gets overshadowed, but I really like what I have seen from him in 2022.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Although the record is not one that stands off the page, the Pirates have been a little better than they have been in past seasons and they are more relevant. However, this is a team that is far from where they would want to be.
Given how bad they have been for a while, a lot of people thought they would be in the basement of the NL Central once again this season. It is clear the Brewers and Cardinals are in a class of their own in the division, but it is fair to say these guys are better than the Reds and Cubs. Although it might not seem like a lot, that statement could not be made even last year.
There is some optimism within this organization because of its youth. There is no question there are some talented players on the big club/minors and if they can pan out, you could see a different Pirates team for years to come.
As is the case for a lot of teams that are rebuilding, there is still an awful lot of work to do. Before they become more complete on both sides of the field, it is hard for me to see them being all that good.
Right now, I would not say the offense is a major issue, although it still has to improve. The biggest weakness is still the pitching and until that gets truly addressed, you are not going to see major changes with the Buckos.
The lack of pitching was once again abundantly clear in their last series with the Brewers, as they allowed 32 runs to Milwaukee. Actually, it was a miracle that the two teams ended up splitting the series.
The competition does not get any easier when they host the Yankees starting on Tuesday. It is not impossible for them to play well in this series, but they will really have to elevate their game against the best team in the league.
Pittsburgh will be sending Jose Quintana to the mound and he does not have a great record but the ERA and some other numbers have been respectable. Being a guy that does not have overpowering stuff, he is really going to have to have excellent location and pitch mix against New York.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Yankees are 12-2 in their last 14 interleague games.
- The Yankees are 20-6 in their last 26 games following a loss.
- The Pirates are 8-17 in their last 25 interleague home games.
- The Pirates are 3-13 in their last 16 games following an off day.
New York Yankees vs. New York Yankees MLB Prediction:
The Yankees did not complete the sweep on Sunday, but it would not shock me if they got back to their winning ways here.
With these two teams, it is very clear New York is the deeper and more talented team, which I expect them to show. The Pirates could be in it for a bit, but I have a hard time seeing them competing for the entirety.
I trust Taillon more in this spot and he should be able to keep up what he has done for a good part of this season. On the other side, I am not expecting a ton from Quintana or the bullpen.
My play is the Yankees at -1.5 here.
