The first part of the Subway Series will come to an end on Wednesday evening from Citi Field.
It has not happened a ton this season, but the Yankees are currently a decent size dog in this spot. Based on the starters, it makes sense, though.
Domingo German will be squaring off against Max Scherzer in this tilt. The total opened at 8 and it has dropped to 7.5 in most spots I have seen.
New York Yankees
Well, the Yankees did not start off on the right foot against their NL rival and they will look to be a lot sharper when they face off in the second game.
This is a team that has played so many good games this season, but Tuesday was not one of them. It was pretty clear who the better team in that particular game was.
Jordan Montgomery, who has been effective this season, did not deliver a strong outing and there is no question he was a big reason for the loss in the opener.
The lefty was unable to give any sort of length and he just was not effective. Some might have wondered why Boone hooked him so early, but it was pretty clear he just did not have it going in that one.
Montgomery finished the day by going 2.1 innings while allowing 5 hits and 4 earned runs. He also did not miss a ton of bats as he recorded just 3 strikeouts.
The offense for the Yankees also cannot be let off the hook. Although they got some runs off of Taijjuan Walker, it was very apparent he did not have his best stuff and they could have done a lot more damage against him.
The Bombers did pick up 9 hits, but it did not lead to a flurry of offense. After Walker departed, they did not have any answers for Adam Ottavino or Edwin Diaz.
It is now time for Domingo German to get the ball and I am not sure that makes the Yankees too confident. I get it was just one start, but he looked pretty bad against the Astros in his first start of the year and will once again not get an easy landing against this lineup.
New York Mets
The Mets knew they had something to prove in this series and they were impressive in the opener of this one.
I thought this team was able to play a pretty complete game and they took care of business against one of the best teams in the sport. It is hard to argue with what they did in the opener.
After the Yankees put up two runs in the first inning, the Mets responded and put up 4 in their first at-bats. They were able to get to Montgomery early and that was the bulk of their scoring, really.
Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso were able to contribute multi-hit games, and the trio combined for 7 of the 10 hits that they got on the night.
I think a lot of people already thought the Mets could very much compete with the Yankees, but they still wanted to see it happen. This first game is a good example of what this team can do when they are truly on their game.
A guy who might not get talked about a ton but has had a solid season is Taijuan Walker who kept that up on Tuesday.
It was clear that the right-hander was shaky at times, but he was mostly able to avoid damage and limit his opponent. Also, it was a good sign that the bullpen did not make things interesting and they just took care of business.
Max Scherzer will be starting in the finale and he has been just what these guys wanted him to be so far. Since returning from the IL, he really has not missed a beat and he still looks like one of the best arms in the NL.

It has not happened a lot so far, but I really am not sold on the Yankees in a spot like this.
It is very clear the Mets have the advantage in starting pitcher and I think that will have a huge impact on the final outcome on Wednesday.
Look, Scherzer could get hit around, but I still expect him to be effective and competitive. As far as German goes, I do not like his chances of giving decent length or pitching all that well.
The Mets are a play for me here, but I still have a hard time laying the runs in this spot. If you do shop around, there are some ML prices that are not too bad.
