The Mets will continue their West Coast trip, as they head to San Diego to start a series with the Padres.
Carlos Carrasco will be going up against Blake Snell in this one.
San Diego is laying a short price at home in the opener.
New York Mets
The Mets continue to be awfully impressive. If you are a fan of this team, it is hard not to like what you have seen from them.
It seems so simple, but this team just seems to play well more often than they play poorly. If they keep up that trend as the year goes by, they will continue to be a dangerous team.
Although New York is battling some key injuries with their two best arms, it is still very rare that they would be totally overmatched in a certain game. With the group of guys that they do have, it is very realistic to expect them to be in a majority of the games they are in even if they are not winning them all.
The way that New York is playing is not surprising to people in the game or themselves. They knew how could they could be and this level of play is what they expected from themselves in 2022.
When you watch them play, it is very clear they are a confident group and as they should be. There is no question they are one of the best teams in the sport and unless a lot of craziness unfolds, I do not see that one changing.
The Mets did not start off their last series with the Dodgers as they would have liked but they did win the final two games and earn the split. If someone were to tell them they went into LA and won half of their games, they would certainly take it.
One theme that was put on full display in the first two games with the Dodgers is the offense for the Mets being nonexistent, as they scored a combined 1 run. That changed in the next two victories, as they were able to score 9 runs and then 5 runs to cap off the series.
Although San Diego is not quite as good as their last opponent, this series will be a tricky one for New York. With that, they certainly feel it is one they can win but they do acknowledge that the Padres present them with a tall task.
San Diego Padres
When I think of teams that have had legitimate bounce-back seasons, the Padres are one that comes to the top of my mind.
This is a crew that has played very well and it does not appear to be smoke and mirrors. In fact, I think they will only get stronger as the season goes on and the chances of them winning the NL West seems increasingly more likely as the games go on.
Based on the roster that San Diego has, I do feel people expected them to be strong this season but of course, there was still the stench of last season. There was certainly reasonable doubt that they would be able to turn the page of a disastrous 2021 campaign.
The Friars have followed a simple formula this season but it has worked for them. The offense has played as advertised and they have gotten very solid production from the pitchers. When those are combined, it typically makes for good results.
Coming into this highly anticipated and important series with the Mets, the Pads hold a record of 33-21 and they trail the Dodgers by just two games. It looks like it will be those two teams competing for the division the whole season long and boy, that will be fun to see how it shakes out.
San Diego made a big statement in their last series, as they went on the road and took 3 of 4 from a tough Brewers team. They will once again have a chance to make a statement when they host this Mets club.
After dropping the first one to the Brewers, this group won the next three and the pitching was excellent. In those remaining games, they tossed 2 shutouts and allowed just a combined 4 runs.
Starting off the series on the mound is Blake Snell and he needs to get back to himself. The reality of the situation is he has not been the guy we have expected in a while and if he continues to do so, it is hard for me to envision his team making a true run.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Mets are 1-4 in their last 5 games vs. NL West.
- The Mets are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
- The Padres are 5-0 in their last 5 games after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Padres are 8-3 in their last 11 vs. NL East.
New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
Man, what a series this should be. With two of the best teams in baseball going at, I am certainly expecting an entertaining one.
Although not by a lot, I do feel New York is the better team overall but I do not love them here. I look for San Diego to start off the series in the right direction.
Based on just the raw numbers, Carrasco has been much more impressive than Snell this season and it would make sense to trust him more. I just feel the Padres will be able to do enough against him, get into that bullpen, and get a solid outing from Snell to take a close game.
My play is on the Padres as a short favorite.
