New York Mets
After winning 1–0 behind a Noah Syndergaard solo home run and complete game shutout on Thursday night (he still has just a 77 ERA+ in seven starts), New York got Josh Hader for the last two innings of a 3–1 defeat on Friday.
Hader struck out five and looked like his dominant self after giving up some runs recently and Milwaukee beat Steven Matz to snap a two-game losing streak.

Jason Vargas has just fifteen strikeouts to twelve walks in twenty innings this season and has given up more than one hit per inning. Every so often he does turn in a start that can make you regret fading him, when he’s got that changeup tumbling.
Milwaukee Brewers
I’m not bullish on Milwaukee this season. Travis Shaw and Ryan Braun haven’t hit in the early-going and, while they won’t scuffle as they have all season, I’m not holding my breath for a scorching runs like both of them had last season.
The bullpen doesn’t have the swagger it had last season, partly because of injuries and partly because it’s tough to sustain that kind of drip over an offseason.

Christian Yelich has a 224 OPS+ and the Brewers are only 18–16. He also missed Friday night’s opener against the Mets because of a back problem. The starting pitching hasn’t been good. It all just feels a little fragile right now.
One starter who has been spectacular is Zach Davies. He’s not Roger Clemens but he’s a little stud in his own right, twenty-six years old with two full seasons as an above-average starting pitcher under his belt.
This season, he’s got a 1.38 ERA in six starts. He’s given up five runs in over thirty-six innings. He’s never been a big strikeout guy (he’s got a great changeup that induces bad contact) but his strikeout to walk ratio is low enough to raise red flags (barely better than 3:2). His WHIP this season is actually worse than his career mark and the FIP isn’t anything that suggests he can maintain that run rate.

At the same time, him continuing to ride the momentum is about the only angle I’ve got here. Unless you like Vargas in what could prove to be a good spot for him. If that’s the case, the under could be a winner.
