New York Mets
All season long, the Mets have been a very impressive team and they remain one of the better ones in all of baseball.
There is no question that this is a team that has dealt with adversity this season, but one word to describe them throughout has been steady. No matter what the circumstances are, that is what the best teams do.
Although it did not happen in the opener with Houston, one part of their game that has been much better this season is the offense, and frankly, it has been a strength of theirs.
Just a season ago, New York was a squad that often got criticized for their inability to score a lot of runs. That certainly has not been the case this season and is a big reason why they have the record they do.
All in all, the pitching has been solid, but there is no question they need their reinforcements out there. A lot of other guys have stepped up, but they will be a different team when Scherzer and deGrom are totally healthy and ready to contribute.
Without those two guys, I still feel the Mets could have a strong regular season, but they would not get over the top. Those are the kind of bulldogs that a team needs come postseason time.
It was understood that this series with the Astros was going to be a challenge and they found that out on Tuesday in the 8-2 loss. Trevor Williams was not particularly effective and neither was the bullpen.
Getting the start in game 2 is Carlos Carrasco and he has been just what they could have asked for. The veteran is currently 8-2 with an ERA of 3.84 and he will get a chance to keep that up against a team he does have some experience against.
Houston Astros
Similar to their opponent, the Astros have looked quite good this season and appear to be one of the best teams in the AL.
The way that this ball club is playing is really how a lot of people thought they would. It was understood that they would once again have a strong season in 2022.
Compared to past Houston teams, this is not the most talented one, but they still know how to get the job done. This is a roster that has a good mix of veterans and youth, which is always important on a team.
One thing they have been able to do so far is take advantage of what is a weak division. People can talk about Seattle and LA being improved, but they are not real threats to Houston and you can see that in the standings.
Coming into this game, the Stros have a record of 42-25 and lead the Rangers by 10 games. Unless there is some sort of huge collapse, I think it is fair to say these guys run away with the divsion.
Just because they seem to have the West on lock, does not mean they should not try to get better at the deadline. I still feel this is a team that could use a rotation piece, a bullpen piece, and a bat. If they did that, I feel it could put them over the top.
On Tuesday, Houston started a stretch of games where all they are going to see is either the Mets or Yankees. All they can really do is take it one game a time and they definitely started it off how they wanted to.
In the game 1 victory, the offense was very effective and Jose Urquidy was able to keep a really good lineup in check. Luis Garcia will be getting the ball in the final game and he is someone who has pitched better than his record. The right hander is 4-5 but holds an ERA of 3.41.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Mets are 23-5 in their last 28 games following a loss.
- The Mets are 3-12 in their last 15 Wednesday games.
- The Astros are 24-9 in their last 33 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Astros are 35-16 in their last 51 overall.
New York Mets vs. Houston Astros MLB Prediction:
New York did not at all play up to their capability in the opener, but I do feel they can be a lot more competiitve in this spot.
Given the injuries the Mets have dealt with, a lot of responsbility has fallen on Carrasco and he has delivered. He will have a tall task here, but I do feel he can keep his team in this one.
Garcia has looked sharp at times this season and I do feel he can pitch well on Wednesday. With that said, the 1.5 runs are too many to lay with Houston for me.
It is more than I would like to pay typically, but I like the Mets at +1.5.
