The Mets and Reds will be squaring off for the second game of their series on Tuesday evening.
Max Scherzer and Nick Lodolo are the expected starters in this one.
New York comes into this game as a very big favorite on the road. I have not seen any movement from the opening total of 9 runs.
New York Mets
The Mets just continue to impress people with how well they have played so far this season. They have been one of the steadiest teams in the league, which has not always been a way to describe this organization.
Of course, this is a team that has a lot more talent than they have had in past years, but they have also dealt with plenty of obstacles, yet they have never truly let it drag them down. That is a sign of a team that not only has depth but resiliency.
Yes, there have been some bumps in the road along the way, but New York has found a way to respond. Even when they went through a period of time of not playing their best baseball, I never felt like the team was spiraling out of control.
After winning their weekend series with the Rangers, this group kept up their winning ways on Monday with a 7-4 win over the Reds. Really, this whole series is one where they have to take care of business and they started it off just how they would have liked.
Although the Mets are 20 games over the.500 mark and are clearly one of the best teams in the sport, it does not mean that the NL East is even close to over. The Braves have looked like a new team for a while now and only trail them by 3.5 games. This will definitely be interesting to watch and see how it shakes out in the end.
In a season that has been full of bright spots, one extra big one will come for them on Tuesday when Max Scherzer is back on the mound and ready to go. Although they have played well in his absence, there is no question that having him back makes them even more dangerous.
In the absence of both Scherzer and deGrom, somebody on the pitching staff really had to step up and that guy was Taijuan Walker, who continues to look very good. In the win on Monday, the righty went 6 innings while allowing 3 earned runs and he struck out 9.
Before being sidelined, the numbers for Mad Max were very good in 2022. The veteran comes into this game with a record of 5-1 and an ERA of 2.54. There has been no official word, but the plan reportedly has been he will go around 6 innings or 90 pitches, but it will depend on how he feels.
Cincinnati Reds
The notion of the Reds getting better as the year goes on simply has not happened. They were a terrible team at the beginning of the season and they remain a terrible team.
I would agree with the thought that they should have a better record with the team they have, but that does not matter a ton. In the end, your record does define who you are and it is not too hard to figure out what this group is.
As I look at this roster, I see a team that does have some talented veterans and young players, but it is far from enough. When a manager puts that lineup on the field daily, it is hard to expect a ton of winning.
In terms of the offense, there is nobody in that lineup that really stands out to me. That is not to say they do not have some solid hitters, but they are not the type of guys that really strikes fear into the opposing pitching staff. Fans would like to hope they improve that area, but that is far from a lock.
As far as their pitching, I find it very similar to the other side of the field. They have some pieces, but they just need more to really compete. Their best starter, Luis Castillo, will likely be traded to a contending team who could use a starter at the deadline.
This is a team that really needs to improve themselves in terms of the rotation and bullpen. Neither one are a strength of theirs and it has really cost them a lot during the season.
Cincinnati knew that this series with the Mets was going to be a very tricky one and it did not start out how they would have wished. Hunter Greene was once again not very impressive, as he went 5.1 innings and allowed 6 earned runs. A lot of people like to rave about this kid, but as of right now, having him get smoked game after game in the majors is not doing him a lot of good.
Now, Cincinnati will be turning to Nick Lodolo and he has not shown a whole lot this season. If he is not careful, he could really get exposed by a very dangerous lineup.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Mets are 5-0 in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- The Mets are 12-2 in their last 14 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
- The Reds are 13-28 in their last 41 when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Reds are 3-14 in their last 17 games following a loss.
New York Mets vs. Cincinnati Reds MLB Prediction:
Not that the Mets needed any help with confidence, but there is no question that having a guy like Scherzer back can boost a team even more. He is a guy that can change the whole attitude of a team for the better.
Although Max has not pitched in an MLB game since May, I still expect him to be sharp. He knows he is not facing a great lineup and if he has pitches going, he has the ability to keep them quiet.
On the other hand, Lodolo is really going to have his hands full here and it is hard for me to back him or the bullpen. It would not shock me if this game brings similar results as Monday.
Give me the Mets laying the runs in this spot.
