The Mets will be in Atlanta to start a critical series with the Braves on Monday evening.
Max Scherzer and Max Fried will be the opposing hurlers in this one and boy, what a pitcher’s duel that should be.
At the moment, the Braves are a short favorite at home. There has been some big movement in the total, as it started off at 9.5 and is now at 7.
New York Mets
The Mets have had a very good season all year long, but they would definitely admit they could be playing some better baseball right about now.
Coming into this game, they are 3-3 in their last 6 games. I get that is not the biggest sample, but I do feel like they have had some chances to pick up wins where they did not, which is never what a team wants to do.
Regardless, aside from being very talented and well-managed, one trait to describe this team is resilient and they will have to show that in this big series starting on Monday.
In their last series, New York split a four-game set with the Marlins. I saw some things in that series that I like from them, but there were also some areas that have to get cleaned up before they play a much better team in Atlanta.
It is hard to be critical of the Mets in the finale, as they had no answers for Alcantara & co. Still, it would have been nice to see them play more consistently and at least earn the series win.
With only 1.5 games separating New York and Atlanta, this series is unquestionably going to have serious implications. Of course, it will be far from deciding the winner of the NL East, but it could at least give us an indication of who it will be when the season is over.
Max Scherzer will certainly be looking for more run support in this one than he got in his first start back against the Reds last week. In that game, he tossed 6 innings, allowed just 1 earned run, but had nothing to show for it.
Even in a new uniform, Mad Max has shown to be one of the best pitchers in the game once again. He is currently 5-1 with an ERA of 2.26 and he has done a better job of controlling the home run ball.
Atlanta Braves
At first, it seemed like it might be a trend that would die out, the Braves continue to be a hot baseball team and there is no question they are one of the better ones in the NL at the moment.
After what was an excellent month of June for this team, they are now playing quite well this month and it is very reasonable they could have similar results when the month of July is over for them.
Coming into this game, they have won 8 of their last 10 games and 3 in a row, which they would love to keep up against their divisional rival.
Listen, there is no question they have played some bad teams since they really have turned the season around, but it has not been all bottom feeders. They have had to go out there and take care of some stiffer competition and they will have a similar task when they host the Mets for this big series right here.
If you are Atlanta, this is really the time to strike when you have a great chance to gain ground on the team directly ahead of you. I think they respect the Mets, but they know they are vulnerable and can certainly be taken down in this series.
Yes, they would like to sweep the series, but the Braves just need to keep up what they have been doing for a while now, which is winning their series. If they can once again do that, they will be in good shape here.
Although a couple of the games were a little closer than they would have liked, the Bravos were able to sweep the Nationals in their last series and will look to keep that play rolling with New York. In that series, the offense did what was expected and the pitching continued to be effective.
Max Fried will be getting the ball here and he has turned in a very impressive season to this point and there is no question he has established himself as one of the better left-handers in the NL. With all of that said, getting win number 10 of the year will be no easy task when he has to face off with a balanced and powerful offense like the Mets.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Mets are 5-0 in their last 5 Monday games.
- The Mets are 2-10 in their last 12 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- The Braves are 19-7 in their last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Braves are 36-15 in their last 51 games.
New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
Wow, two of the best teams in the NL with two great pitchers on the mound? This game, and really this series, should make for a good one.
Although it is very close, I do view the Braves as the better team and I feel they will show that here.
It would not surprise me at all if both starters are effective here, but when it comes down to the bullpens, I trust Atlanta more in this spot.
I like the Braves as a short favorite at home.
