Minnesota Twins
Minnesota dropped the first game of its doubleheader with New York on Wednesday, 5–4, in extra innings.
Starting pitcher Louie Varland got into the sixth but the Twins still had to use six relief pitchers, including Jorge Lopez for an inning and Jhoan Duran for two.
The Yankees’ starter, Domingo German, got through six but they still had to tax their bullpen just as much. With another game scheduled in the evening, this one on Thursday is setting up to be a slugfest.
Sonny Gray will start for Minnesota. He is a former Yankee who made 34 career starts for the Pinstripes.
New York is the only big league franchise Gray has not posted a triple-digit ERA+, however.
His mark was 114 in Oakland (112 starts), 135 in Cincinnati (68 starts), and 123 in Minnesota (so far 21 starts, all this season).
For the Yankees, Gray’s ERA+ was just 96 in 34 starts over a season-and-a-half.
Will he revert to his prior New York form at Yankee Stadium or feel even more emboldened as a visitor?
New York Yankees
German didn’t get the win in game one but he continued to eat innings and pitch well, which is a big development for New York as it presses ahead to the postseason.
The reality is, however, that these Yankees look like a team that could get bounced much earlier than its seed will suggest, unless it can generate some momentum here in the season’s final weeks.
Aaron Judge hit his 55th home run of the season to get New York on the scoreboard Wednesday afternoon but he’s the only one hitting in the Yankee’s lineup.
Giancarlo Stanton (leg) didn’t play. Neither did Anthony Rizzo (migraines), nor DJ LaMahieu (toe).
Rizzo was placed on the IL but it will be retroactive. The other two have not yet been, though both could need more time to recover, especially LaMahieu, who has been playing through the injury and slumping as a result.

Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees MLB Prediction:
Gray wasn’t terrible as a Yankee but New York fans won’t be holding him dear to heart in this game.
Don’t expect a great outing from him, especially as a Twin. There is no franchise the Yankees dominate more in recent history.
New York’s pitching will be thin, as will Minnesota’s, but it can mix and match and find its way through 27 outs here.
Give me the Yankees, who will certainly be favored at home but perhaps not much.
