Minnesota Twins

Kyle Gibson couldn’t hang with Rick Porcello in his last start. He pitched well but Boston’s offense eventually got to him and then broke it open in the later innings.

He hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his last five starts. Gibson’s ERA is down to 3.25 after briefly crossing over the 4.00 threshold.

But the Indians are hot and the Twins are falling down, down, down in the AL Central. Without Miguel Sano in the picture (he’s been sent down to Single-A in Florida), Minnesota lacks the firepower to keep up. Their all-star from a year ago has to get back soon.

Chicago White Sox

A 1.27 WHIP as a starter is not deserved of a 2–9 record but that’s the reality when you pitch for the White Sox. That’s the reality for James Shields.

In five of Shields’ 17 starts, he’s given up exactly one run and he’s 1–1 in those five starts. He’s had two starts with two runs allowed and another five with three. Those are 12 of his 17 outings.

Yet he has just one win since the calendar turned to April. He won his first start of the season with six innings of four-run ball.

He was out in the fifth inning of his last start against Oakland. He gave up eight runs but only two of them were earned. He just doesn’t get a lot of help.
