Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers went into the season’s final weekend just a game behind St. Louis in the NL Central and had a chance to at least force a one-game playoff for the division title, if not win it.
The Cardinals botched two of their three games against the Cubs but Milwaukee did even worse, losing all three of its games at Coors Field. Now the Crew has to go on the road and hope to rediscover some of its prior momentum.

Of course, before taking the brooms, Milwaukee had won 18 of 20 to stomp the Cubs and get into the playoffs, mostly without Christian Yelich, who finished with 44 home runs in 130 games and stole 30 bases on the nose for just the fourth 30/30 season in Major League Baseball since 2012. Two of those seasons came in 2018 with Mookie Betts and Jose Ramirez and the other two occurred this season with Ronald Acuna doing it alongside Yelich.
Brandon Woodruff missed two months toward the end of the season but he returned in a couple of weeks ago and started twice on a limited basis. He went two innings in each, gave up zero hits, a walk, and struck out seven.
He won’t go seven innings on Tuesday but if he’s pumping fastballs by the Nats, Craig Counsell will have to consider stretching him out three, four, even five innings. You know Woodruff will want the ball.
Washington Nationals
He’ll face Max Scherzer, who hasn’t thrown a zero for an outing since July 6. He also didn’t have the finest September, going 2–2 in five starts and giving up 17 runs in just about 30 innings.
Both he and Stephen Strasburg are rested enough to start this game but Scherzer has two extra days and he’s got the experience and the trust of his teammates, manager, and fans. It isn’t a surprising move, despite Strasburg throwing better of late. He’ll be available for Game 1 of the NLDS in Los Angeles, if Washington is fortunate enough to win on Tuesday.

This will be Washington’s first NL Wild Card game. It has made the playoffs four times since 2012 and lost in the LDS in each of the four, three times in the decisive fifth game.
This year feels different. Washington has won eight in a row going into Tuesday and has been simply terrific since late-May, when it fell 12 games under .500 through 50 games.
The Nats won 74 of their final 112 games and they did it with more than just great pitching. Anthony Rendon is a legitimate MVP candidate over the other big sluggers in the NL and Juan Soto backs him up as one of the top 3-4 combinations in any lineup in baseball.
Trea Turner and Adam Eaton are healthy and getting on base at the top of the lineup and the bottom half has produced too with veterans like Asdrubal Cabrera and the young phenom Victor Robles.
The only area I am concerned about is Washington’s bullpen. The back end has been suspect, though Daniel Hudson’s last few outings were promising.
With all of its arms available, Washington should be able to get just enough to finally move on in the National League’s playoffs.

Free Milwaukee Brewers vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction: UNDER 7.5
I can’t play Washington at that price, given the possibility of a bullpen meltdown.

Give me that under in what should be a nervy game with lots of 98+ MPH heaters.
