The Brewers’ offense finally scored some runs against Pittsburgh, thirteen to be exact. The Brewers had a 7–0 lead for Wade Miley in the fourth inning, though Miley ran into some trouble at that point.
He only got through four and gave up more than two runs for just the second time in fifteen starts.
So here goes, this series begins on Monday and this will be the second of three. The Brewers come into the series with a two-game lead over St. Louis in the wild card standings, trying to protect that lead to assure they host the play-in game at Miller Park.
Doube G, Gio Gonzalez, takes the ball for Milwaukee. He’s 3–0 in three starts since coming over to Milwaukee from Washington, having given up three runs in over sixteen innings.
It’s all lined for up Gonzalez to pitch in that wild card matchup, potentially against the Cardinals, depending on how the final weeks shakes out. That makes for an interesting situation in this one.
St. Louis Cardinals
Of course, the Cardinals will probably show Milwaukee its starting pitcher in a potential wild card game in this series, if the Birds are to qualify.
It could be Austin Gomber, but that’s a lot to put on a young rookie. But Gomber has gone 5–1 as a full-time starter since the start of August. He gives up hits but shows an excellent propensity to limit damage, a rarity for a rook.
Ideally, Mike Shildt would like to start Miles Mikolas in that game but he just beat the Giants on Sunday with seven innings of two-hit ball and is scheduled to start on Saturday against Chicago.
If the Cardinals can get away with skipping him in that start, I imagine they will and set themselves up to throw the ace in the playoff opener. It’s all a part of what to keep an eye on in the crucial final week of the regular season.

Free Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction: Milwaukee.
Milwaukee’s got to win one of these games and they are going to go after Gomber with their own ace on the other side. Gonzalez and the bullpen pitch just well enough to get it done.
