Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers did win on Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak but it has fallen behind the Pirates in the crowded NL Central.
Milwaukee hasn’t named a starter for this game yet. It won’t be Freddie Peralta, who has some swelling in the elbow again and has hit the Injured List. It may be Corbin Burnes, who would be the next logical choice in the rotation, unless Counsell tries to work in Peralta’s replacement.
Mike Moustakas also left Saturday’s game with a hand problem. It’s undetermined what his immediate future is. He’s one of four Brewers’ regulars with a triple-digit OPS+ and it’s up around 130.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals beat the Mets on Saturday, 10–2. Miles Mikolas went eight strong for his second win of the season and Paul Goldschmidt smacked his eighth home run of the season to pull himself into a tie with Marcell Ozuna for the team lead.
Goldy’s batting average has crept up in the last week or so, to .235 with a respectable (though still low for him) OBP. The Cardinals’ bigger concern is that Matt Carpenter left the game on Saturday after fouling a ball of his knee. I doubt it’s a long-term injury but contusions can keep guys out for a couple days, at least.
Even after the stellar outing, Mikolas’ ERA is still well short of league-average. The entire Cardinals’ starting rotation is, including Jack Flaherty, who threw 150 innings with a 116 ERA+ a season ago.
Flaherty was building some momentum with a start better than the previous, up until last time out, in Milwaukee, where he didn’t get out of the third inning. This will already be his third start against the Crew this season.
