The Cubs got the David Ross era off to a great start as the new manager led his Cubs team to a 3-0 opening night win over division foe Milwaukee.
The Brewers are going to need to find their offense in order to even up this series on Saturday. Milwaukee was held to 3 hits in a CG from Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks and could face a tough test in Yu Darvish in game two.
Milwaukee Brewers
Not only did the Brewers manage just 3 hits on Friday, they all came off the bat of Orlando Arcia, the #9 batter. The rest of the Milwaukee lineup combined to go 0-27 with 9 K’s.
The Brewers may struggle again Saturday as they’ve hit just .194 as a team vs. Darvish. Christian Yelich does boast a .364 average vs. the Chicago starter with 2HR in 11 ABs.
Corbin Burnes gets the start for Milwaukee in game two after posting a 1-5 record last year in his first season as a starter. Burnes was great out of the bullpen in 2018 though, going 7-0 with a 2.61 ERA appearing in 30 games.
By all account Burnes has had a great exhibition season even though it’s been a weird one. Burnes is still very iffy though as he record the first 9 outs via strikeout in a start vs. the Cardinals but also gave up 11 HR in four starts.
Chicago Cubs
The Chicago offense wasn’t stellar on Friday but they found the long ball when needed. Ian Happ poked out a 2-run shot while Anthony Rizzo provided an insurance solo in the 3-0 win.
The Cubs have hit 5 HRs as a team vs. Burnes in 33 combined AB. Kris Bryant is 0-4 vs. the Brewers starter though and also went 0-4 in his first game as the Cubs permanent leadoff hitter.
Yu Darvish seems to have his lack of confidence issues behind him in the back end of 2019, posting a 2.76 ERA compared to 5.01 in the 1st half. Darvish comes into the season with 10 usable pitches – but are they effective?
Darvish was also very solid vs. the Brewers last year holding Milwaukee to a 0.90 ERA in 10 IP across two starts that also includes 15K’s.
