Miami Marlins
The Marlins lost 2-1 to Toronto on Wednesday, splitting a 2 game series with the Jays. They have slipped below surging Philadelphia in the NL East standings.
Looking to get back on track they are taking on one of the hottest teams in the Majors right now in Tampa Bay. It does not look like it is going to be a productive weekend for the Marlins.
It has not been announced but it looks like Pablo Lopez will be the starter for the Marlins in this one. He has definitely been the best pitcher for Miami this season. He lost but pitched well against Tampa in his most recent start.
Miami has been a nice story but they are still dealing with all sorts of injury absences and did not do anything at the deadline to give themselves a push.
Even though he is off that loss Lopez makes the Marlins a live dog in this spot.
Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa took two of three from the Yankees to start the week to extend their lead in the AL East. They have lost only twice in their last 10 ball games.
Like Miami, they were quiet at the deadline but they did just get Charlie Morton back and he won against New York. That is a huge improvement down the stretch and he will make them that much tougher to beat in the playoffs.
With Morton back someone will have to exit the rotation, I think it will be lefty Josh Fleming. Nevertheless, I think Ryan Yarbrough gets the start in this spot even though it has not been announced.
The Rays might not have huge names but their bullpen is rock solid, 7th in WAR in the Majors this season. They are brilliant at mixing and matching.
Tampa is fourth in strikeouts and that should play well against the Marlins.
