Miami Marlins
The Marlins have been an up-and-down baseball team to start off the season. They have done some things well but they have not been done on a consistent enough level.
When you play in a division such as the NL East, consistency is so important. Given the kind of teams that are in that division, trading wins and losses are just not going to get it done.
There is no question that Miami has spent the last multiple years building their team with the necessary pieces for the future. They have made progress in putting out a representative club but they are still a long way from the Braves, Mets, or Phillies.
To me, the biggest strength of this group is their pitching. The offense is capable but they still have a lot of work to do in that department before they can get to the next level.
If this team can get a little more balanced, then there is no reason to believe why they cannot be competing for the East on a regular basis. They do not have the payroll that a lot of the bigger markets have, so being able to just buy talent is not something they will be able to do all that often.
Through the first 24 games, the Fish stand with a record of 12-12. They find themselves in second place and trail the Mets by 4.5 games.
Miami just got swept the lowly Diamondbacks before this series and that could not have made them feel all that great. Each game they lost was by one run. Even though they were close, you cannot lose every contest to one of the worst teams in baseball.
Things do not get any easier for this crew when they start things off with the Padres. Even though they have Alcantara on the mound, it will be a very tall order on Friday. Before that, though they have to focus on game 1 on Thursday.
San Diego Padres
It has been a strong start to the season for the Padres and I have been impressed with what I have seen from them. When they are at full health, there is no reason for me to believe that they cannot be a true threat in the NL.
I certainly got the sense that they came into the 2022 season with something to prove. Last season was a total disaster and they knew that could not happen again this year. There are too many good players on this roster for them not to at least be in the playoffs.
In some ways, I view San Diego as the inverse of the Marlins. I think their offense is very dangerous and is a true strength of theirs but I am not sold on their pitching. Yes, they do have some big names but they are too unpredictable for me to have all that much confidence in them when things really begin to matter.
If the Padres were to win the NL West, it would not be an easy feat. We already know how good the Giants and Dodgers are and now you have teams like the Rockies and Diamondbacks playing decently which was not really expected.
Certainly, the head-to-head games with divisional rivals are going to be huge in the West. It is possible that is what decides the winner of it.
San Diego split a two-game series with Cleveland this week and each game was decided by 1 run. The Friars took the first one by a score of 5-4 and the Guardians took the second one by a score of 6-5. They would have liked to have beaten them both times but it is hard to be all that critical of them at this point in time.
MacKenzie Gore went 5.2 innings and allowed 1 earned run in the finale with Cleveland. He was quite effective but the bullpen did not hold up their end of the agreement and was the reason they did not get the win.
Yu Darvish will be getting the ball in this one. He comes into this ball game with a record of 2-1 and an ERA of 4.44.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Marlins are 19-46 in their last 65 road games.
- The Marlins are 2-6 in their last 8 Friday games.
- The Padres are 4-0 in their last 4 games as the favorite.
- The Padres are 6-2 in their last 8 games overall.
Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
The Padres have been playing some good ball as of late and I would not be shocked to see that keep up here.
Miami has the starting pitching advantage but I do not feel things will come easy for them. I look for this one to be a close one for sure.
I know that the total is low for a reason but I am not in love with the under. It may not be a total shootout but I also do not see it being a 2-1 game either.
I like the over of 6.5 runs here.
