The Marlins and Phillies will be starting a series on Monday night from Citizens Bank Park.
Sandy Alcantara will be opposed by Aaron Nola in this one.
Philadelphia is a decent favorite at home here with the total sitting at 7.5.
Miami Marlins
Throughout the course of this season, the Marlins have been a weird team to figure out. They have shown glimpses of the team they can be, but that has not been shown on a regular enough basis.
They certainly did not start off the year in a way they would have wished and there was some doubt if they would ever turn things around.
When people think of this team, they often go to the pitching, but I have also liked what I have seen from the offense and they seem to be better in that area than they were a year ago.
A common theme for them in the 2021 season was they would get strong pitching, but the offense often would not do their job to help get the wins.
I would still like to see Miami get better on the offensive side, but I do like what I have seen from them in that area and only feel they can get better there.
In their last series, the Marlins went into Houston and beat the Astros two of three times. That was certainly a big statement win for them and they will look to carry that over into this series with the Phils.
Miami knows this series with Philadelphia will be a tricky one, but they should feel confident with this team. If they are on their game, there is no reason for them not to feel confident in their chances.
Sandy Alcantara will be getting the start in the opener on Monday and he has been one of the best pitchers in the sport. He is certainly in the Cy Young conversation for this year and it would not shock me if he won it. Coming into play, he is 6-2 with an ERA of 1.61.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies continue to be an up-and-down baseball team and it does not look like it is going to change throughout the season.
Similar to the Marlins, this team got off to a bad start but did eventually start to play better. Given the kind of hole they dug themselves in, it still is going to take a lot of work for them to get where they want to be.
Despite getting smoked by the Diamondbacks by a score of 13-1 on Sunday, Philadelphia has still won 9 of their last 10 games and is starting to look more like the team we thought they were.
For as well as they have looked in that span, it would be crazy to think they are not eventually going to go back to their old ways and start underperforming. When all is said and done, it would not shock me if this team goes 84-78.
If you want a good example of how they are a middling ball club, look no further than their record, which sits at 30-30. If a team has the same number of wins as losses at the 60-game mark, it is hard to really have much confidence in them for the remainder of the year.
Right now, the Mets lead them by 9 games and the Braves lead them by 3.5 games. If you are the Phils, your goal should be to catch Atlanta for 2nd and then focus on the Mets, although surpassing New York right now seems very unlikely.
In past seasons, the Phillies might not have taken a series with the Marlins all that seriously, but that should not be the case here. This is a team that is no pushover and could make them pay if they are not on their game.
Aaron Nola will be getting the nod in this one and he has seen mixed results so far this season. I would not say he has not been impressive, but I do feel he could take his pitching to another level.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Marlins are 4-0 in their last 4 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Marlins are 5-1 in their last 6 games on grass.
- The Phillies are 9-1 in their last 10 games.
- The Phillies are 1-4 in their last 5 games following a loss.
Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies MLB Prediction:
Both of these teams have been playing better ball of late and it will be interesting to see how this series starts off.
Despite the Phillies being at home and having more offensive firepower, I am not sold on them in this one due to the pitching matchup.
Alcantara has been nearly perfect this season and I see him being sharp once again. I look for his strong pitching to propel his team to a close win in the opener.
My play is the Marlins on the Moneyline.
