Miami Marlins
When the Marlins resumed play after the All-Star Break with a single game against Texas, their television commentators were hopeful for a stretch of winning baseball against some weak opponents to get back in the playoff chase.
Miami had Texas for a game, followed by Pittsburgh, Cincinnati (current series), the Mets, Cincinnati again, and the Cubs.
It’s a light schedule but Miami, though stocked with some talented pitching, isn’t exactly the superior team on a nightly basis.
So far, the Fish have gone just 2–3 after losing game one to Cincinnati on Monday, 11–2.
The Reds’ Nick Lodolo went six innings and allowed two unearned runs in the win.
Trevor Rogers, meanwhile, gave up eight hits and six runs before getting the hook in the fourth.
Now Miami has to deal with Luis Castillo, a legitimate ace who could be showcasing his talent for an impending deal to a World Series contender.
Braxton Garrett, a former first round pick in 2016, will make his tenth start of the season in opposition.
He’s logged a 120 ERA+ in 47 innings and didn’t lose in four starts in the month of July.
In those four starts, he went 25 innings and gave up 11 hits and five earned runs, striking out 25 batters to just five walks.
Cincinnati Reds
Castillo led the league in losses a season ago, despite pitching at an All-Star level (117 ERA+).
He’s just 3–4 in 13 starts this season, while pitching at an elite level (166 ERA+).
Castillo hasn’t pitched since fanning two in the All-Star Game a week ago but his month of July was every bit as good as Garrett’s.
The Reds’ flamethrower went seven innings and gave up exactly one earned run in all three of his July starts. He gave up a dozen hits in those 21 innings and struck out 22.
Of course, he didn’t win any of those games, though Cincinnati did manage to win all three of them.
He’s making $7 million this season and will be up for arbitration in the offseason, where he will win quite a bit more for his efforts this year.
Cincinnati’s window is further off and the franchise has been actively shopping him. He’s perhaps the biggest fish available for the contenders to try and land.
This, quite possibly, could be his final start in a Cincinnati uniform.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Marlins are 12-2 in their last 14 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- The Marlins are 9-4 in their last 13 road games.
- The Reds are 16-35 in their last 51 during game 2 of a series.
- The Reds are 3-7 in their last 10 vs. the NL East.
Miami Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds MLB Prediction:
Neither offense will do much of anything, not just in the early going, but all evening.
Two runs may be enough to win this one. Three almost certainly will be. The total is much too high for a game that shouldn’t see more than five men cross the plate.
