Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers couldn’t hold serve at home in Game 2 and now travel South for a best-of-3 that begins with two in San Diego.
Tony Gonsolin will get the call in Game 3. He made his first All-Star Team this year after finishing the first half 11–0.
He gave up all three runs for the National League and took the loss in that game but proceeded to win for the Dodgers, going 16–1 before a forearm strain forced him to miss a month.
That gave him only enough time to return for one game with the Dodgers before the end of the season. He threw 40 pitches and gave up three hits and a run in two innings against the Rockies.
Of course, that was a week and a half ago. He has thrown plenty since then and Manager Dave Roberts said he is on a 75-pitch limit in this game.
That wouldn’t be a concern if Tyler Anderson was going to piggyback Gonsolin in relief but the Dodgers are planning to save Anderson for a start in Game 4.
That means Dustin May, who only threw 30 innings this season after making his return from arm surgery in late-August, or Andrew Heaney could be pressed into multi-inning relief.
It’s not the sort of situation one expects an 111-win team to find itself in so early in the postseason but the Dodgers are a club built on depth and therefore, for this very sort of challenge.
With the exceptions of Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw, who started the first two games, respectively, look for the Dodgers to use anyone and everyone out of the bullpen.
That may just include the “unavailable” Anderson, if the situation calls for it. Playoff baseball calls for a win-today-at-all-costs mindset.
San Diego Padres
The Padres’ win in Game 2 flipped home-field advantage and suddenly has San Diego fans feeling good about their team’s chances in the series.
The Padres’ bullpen is ridiculously hot and there is no question as to whom Manager Bob Melvin will start in Game 3.
That’s Blake Snell, a Cy Young Award winner four years ago who blanked the Dodges over five innings as recently as September 27.
But the Dodgers have seen Snell plenty, with a mixed bag of results. And the more they see the bullpen, the better the chances they will eventually do damage.
San Diego’s offense must start fast and set a tone that it’s going for the early kill. The Padres have the momentum and they will not get it back if they lose it.
That first inning will be huge. If Snell puts up a zero and the Padres don’t let Gonsolin get comfortable, they will ride the wave.
If, however, it stays close early or the Dodgers even strike first, the tide will turn and this series may not even have to go back to Los Angeles.
The Dodgers have the sort of firepower to finish this series on the road.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres MLB Playoff Prediction:
There is a lot to like about San Diego between its red-hot bullpen and all the question marks on the Dodger’s side.
But winning one game is one thing. Winning three out of five is something much more.
Petco Park is going to be rowdy but the home field can be a funny thing sometimes. Often, it gives the home team a boost. Other times, it can induce nerves.
The Dodgers have to be licking their chops at the possibility of putting up a couple of runs early before the Padres get a chance to dig in.
With Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Freddie Freeman at the top, you have to like the Dodgers’ chances to do just that.
This one could go totally wrong but getting the Dodgers at -125 does offer value after just one slip-up so far.
Look for the adversity to bring out the best in the NL’s best club and LA to win this one on the road.
