Two of the best teams in baseball will be starting a series on Tuesday evening when the Mets play host to the Dodgers.
It is nothing heavy, but Los Angeles is the favorite on the road in this one with the number being right around -135. The total opened at 8.5 and there has not been a lot of movement from that so far.
Andrew Heaney and Taijaun Walker are the expected starters in this one.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers come into this game having won eight of their last ten games and they enter play with an amazing record of 89-38.
Throughout this season, there have been lots of teams that are impressive, but it is pretty clear this one right is the best of them all.
Even with some of the injuries they have dealt with, their level of play has just been higher than anyone else in the league. It does not mean they will automatically win it all, but it is hard to envision them not making some serious noise in October.
Los Angeles picked up a 3-2 win on Monday over the Marlins and were able to take three games out of four against the Fish.
Michael Grove started things off last time out and went 4.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits while punching out four batters. When he left the game, a bunch of relievers were used and they were quite effective as Miami was only able to get two hits and no runs the rest of the way.
Offensively, the Dodgers were able to do a lot of damage on Friday and Sunday, but they did get contained in the other two games. In game two, Sandy Alcantara tossed a complete game and allowed one run, and Pablo Lopez went six innings and allowed just two runs on Monday.
After doing what they needed to do against a team they were a lot better than in their last series, things are certainly going to be much tricker in this one as they get to square off with another NL East opponent. When they met earlier on in the year, the two clubs split four games on the West Coast.
Andrew Heaney will get the ball in this one and it has been hard to complain about what he has done since being a Dodger. I get that he has not pitched a ton for them, but he has been effective so far and he will look to repeat what he did against the Brewers last time out.
New York Mets
The Mets had the day off on Monday and are now ready to host the Dodgers in a three-game set where they will be looking to prove they can hang with the best of the best.
This is a team that was able to take three of four against the Rockies last time, but they did not leave the series with a good taste in their mouth as they got shutout 1-0 in an all too familiar fashion.
Max Scherzer fired seven innings and allowed just one earned run while punching out 11 batters on Sunday. After he did not exactly have his sharpest stuff against the Yankees, it was a good sign for him to pitch like that even though he had nothing to show for it.
Look, this Mets team has been quite good all season long and it is hard to knock them too much, but not giving enough run support to some of the best arms in the game cannot happen. It has happened many times with deGrom and it is not the first time with Mad Max.
Of course, I will give credit to German Marquez who tossed seven innings and allowed just a hit and no runs in the finale, but that still is not acceptable for a lineup like the Mets. To me, there is no excuse in that spot to produce a goose egg.
Something as baseball fans we have heard a lot this season is the fact that this Mets team is different than past seasons and I agree. With that said, for me to truly believe that they are different, they are going to have to really show me something in this series.
If New York goes out there and wins a series with a team like this, then I might have more confidence that they could give them some issues in the playoffs if they were to meet. If not, I will still think they are a very good team, but it is clear they are not the top dog yet and still have some work to do before they are.
Getting the ball to open things up for the Mets is Taijuan Walker and I have liked what I have seen from him this year. Clearly, there are other pitchers on this staff who are going to get more attention, so he does get overshadowed at times, but he has been a reliable starter in this rotation and is a big part of their success in 2022.

In a battle with two top teams like this, I do have more confidence in the Dodgers to open things up.
To me, Los Angeles is still the more talented and complete team and I think what will show in this first one. It is not all based on that, but that is a big reason for my trust here.
The offense for the Mets has gone through plenty of cold spells this season and if Heaney is on his game, I have a hard time seeing them do all that much against and the same goes for the pen.
As I noted earlier, I have liked what Walker has done to this point, but he is going to be in for a huge challenge when facing this order and I do not exactly love him in this spot to go along with a bullpen that is talented yet shaky.
