Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers could not string anything together against Bryse Wilson on Thursday night and fell into a 3-1 series hole.
Wilson out-dueled Clayton Kershaw with six innings and five strikeouts, allowing just one hit: a solo home run to Edwin Rios.
Kershaw matched him through five but came undone in the sixth when he faced the top of Atlanta’s lineup for the third time through.
Now the Dodgers face more than a 3–0 hole, like they did in their only series victory on Wednesday. This time, they face elimination and yet another failure in a season that brought so much promise.
They will turn to Dustin May, a 23-year-old and rookie by rule, though he has thrown in at least a dozen games during each of the last two years.
May has serious heat and a big-league breaking ball. As a result, he’s given up just four hits and one run in eight postseason innings thus far.
He appeared out of the bullpen in Game 1 of this series, when the scored was tied at one. He had a quick inning and came out for a second but got into some trouble before Roberts gave him the hook.
The Dodgers escaped that inning but it gave the Braves a chance to see May, who only threw twenty-one pitches.
Atlanta Braves
That sort of workload shouldn’t affect May at all in this game. Throwing him in Game 1 was one of the better decisions Dave Roberts has made with his pitching staff in this series.
Unlike May, who came in as a reliever, Max Fried, who threw ninety-six pitches as a starter, will not appear in this game.
That is, unless Brian Snitker is playing a trick on LA. Word out of the Atlanta camp is that Fried will come back on Game 6 on full rest, if necessary.
The decision gives Atlanta the opportunity to take a shot with a staff day in a low-leverage situation. I believe most agree its the right move.
What it does do, however, is look ahead to Game 6, even in some small way. The announcement gets fans, coaches and even players alike thinking ahead to Game 6.
That may have no effect on Atlanta, which can just stay loosey-goosey and prove to Dustin May he’s no better than anyone else they’ve seen in the series.
The Braves must be feeling good and would like nothing more than to close this out here so that they’re not looking forward to Fried’s start in Game 6 but rather in Game 1 of the World Series.

I’d love to think the Braves have won this thing. All of our investment in them so far in this series has paid off handsomely, as much as we may have missed our opportunity to fade in Game 3.
But if I know the Dodgers, it means there will be drama. This series goes “back” to LA for another round of the future stars of the game: Buehler, Fried and maybe even guys like Anderson and Urias.
