Los Angeles Angels
L.A. took the series opener on Thursday night, winning 5-3. It helped that Shohei Otani became the first Japanese player to hit for the cycle as he has been mostly quiet this season. Best of all the bullpen showed up, pitching 4 scoreless innings. This team obviously has top end talent but they are very weak in some key areas. Their 2B/SS combo, in part due to injury might be the worst in the league.
Down a couple of starters from the beginning of the season the Angels are digging a little deeper than expected this season. Jose Suarez has just two starts under his belt and the most we can say is that he was OK. He is a lefty win an interesting build and will definitely have the unfamiliarity advantage in this spot. If the bullpen stays strong he could get the win.
Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa should have success against the Angels this weekend. Although the Rays are not a great hitting team the Angels are hardly fearsome on the hill. Tommy Pham has been hitting well and has his average close to .300 but they need more from him. He usually hits well against lefties and they need him to get hot, both to produce and give the club some attitude.
Charlie Morton is 8-0 this season and looking like the front runner for the Cy Young award. The team is 10-4 in his starts which is pretty good too. Most players struggle going from the NL to the AL but Morton has been awesome with a combined record of 37-10. Sure there are some team factors there but wow. He has actually been sharper on the road but he is more than playable at home.
