The Angels and Mariners will play a scheduled doubleheader on Saturday. This preview looks at the nightcap with a first pitch at 7:10 on the West Coast.
Los Angeles Angels
The Angels’ losing streak is over but they have gone just 2–4 in the six games since.
One of those wins was on Thursday night in the Halos’ first game of the season against Seattle, 4-1.
Shohei Ohtani got the win as the starting pitcher, going six innings and giving up three hits and no runs. He struck out six.
Mike Trout provided all the offense with a pair of two-run homers to give him 18 on the season.
Michael Lorenzon will go on Friday night and Patrick Sandoval in the first game on Saturday. As of now, interim manager Phil Kevin has not announced a starting pitcher in this game.
Noah Syndergaard started after Sandoval the last time through the rotation but that was on Tuesday, which would mean starting on just three days rest if he were to take the ball in this game.
Instead, expect a spot start from somebody else on the staff.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners haven’t even named a starter to oppose Sandoval in Game 1 on Saturday.
Robbie Ray will start Friday night’s game. Perhaps Matt Brash will get another chance to start in well over a month.
The 24-year-old from Kingston, Canada made five starts in April and early May before he was sent back down to the minors. He could be an option in this spot for Manager Scott Servais.
No one else outside of Seattle’s starting five has started a game this season.
The bullpen has not been a strong point for the M’s. Only three guys have an ERA better than league average, the best being Erik Swanson.
The 28-year-old from Fargo, North Dakota has allowed just two earned runs this season, coming in back-to-back appearances last month. His 1.13 ERA is over 300 percent better than average.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Angels are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. American League West.
- Angels are 0-6 in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
- Angels are 0-5 in their last 5 during game 3 of a series.
- Angels are 1-11 in their last 12 road games.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction:
This game will fly into the double-digits and finish over whatever the oddsmakers list the total at.
Neither team appears to have a dependable starting pitcher to begin the game; nor does either side have a strong bullpen.
So don’t overthink this one. Some regulars may be out in the second game of the doubleheader but the severe lack of pitching on both sides will send this one over.
