The Angels and Red Sox will be squaring off in the second game of their series on Wednesday, May 4th.
Reid Detmers is going up against Garrett Whitlock here.
Boston took the first game by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday.
Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have looked pretty good for the most part this season but I still do not know how good of a team they will end up when all is said and done. There is still part of me that thinks they will be a middling squad by the end of the season.
There is no question they are a talented team and got better in the offseason but it is hard to have all that much trust that they will be all that relevant. I still do not feel they are better than the Astros or Mariners in their division and their win total will likely be somewhere in the 80’s.
As you look at their schedule they have had some success against better teams but have also dropped to some clubs that are not very good. Given what they have given fans of late, it is hard to be all that critical of a 15-10 start.
On most nights, the offense is a true strength of theirs and I would expect them to score plenty of runs in 2022. Based on some of the guys they have in their lineup, that should not come as a huge surprise.
Even with that, I still have my questions about their pitching. That part of their game has been an issue for them for a while now and is a big reason why they have not been able to get over the hump in recent memory.
So far, the pitching has been a little better this season, and part of that has come from the newly acquired Noah Syndergaard. In the loss on Tuesday, he went 7 innings and allowed 3 earned runs.
The right-hander battled out there and gave his team a chance to win. It did not matter though, as he got no run support.
Reid Detmers is going in game 2 and he has had mixed results so far. He is 1-1 with an ERA north of 5.
Boston Red Sox
When you look at the whole picture, the Red Sox have certainly not played very well. They have shown here and there what they can be but it does not look like it is going to be sustainable.
This is a team that came into this season with pretty high expectations. Yes, there were some folks that questioned how they would hold up with their depth, specifically in regards to pitching but they still expected the offense to carry them on nights where the pitching was not great.
With an offense that features some of the hitters they do, that side of the ball has not given them all that much production. They consistently have not been great at hitting in clutch spots and have not been able to take advantage of weak pitching.
Just recently Boston made some of the pitchers on the Orioles look like Cy Young. If this team was really rolling, they would be hitting those guys all around the ballpark like they ought to be.
Another area of this team that clearly is not a strength of theirs and has to get addressed is the bullpen. Whether they are giving up timely hits, walking people, throwing wild pitches, etc., it has not been very good and that part of the team has cost them plenty of games.
Boston will really look to try and get back on track in this series with the Halos. They got a solid win in game 1 and will look to repeat that on Wednesday evening.
Michael Wacha continues to impress as he went 5.2 innings and did not allow an earned run against LA. This guy has really surprised some people and it will be interesting to see his body of work when the year is done because I like what I have seen out of him.
The Sox will turn to Garrett Whitlock in this one and they have plenty of reasons to feel confident when he is out there. He currently is 1-1 with an ERA of 0.54. It is definitely different seeing him as a starter but I feel he can have similar results to when he was in the pen.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Angels are 1-4 in their last 5 games against AL East.
- The Angels are 3-10 in their last 13 after scoring 2 runs or less in the previous game.
- The Red Sox are 66-32 in their last 98 Wednesday games.
- The Red Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 games overall.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction:
The Red Sox did just what they had to do in game 1 and I can see them doing it again on Wednesday.
They have the starting pitching advantage and when the game goes to the bullpen, I trust Boston more.
Detmers is going to have his hands full with this Sox lineup and I am not so sure he will be able to be all that effective against them.
I like the Red Sox on the ML here.
