Los Angeles Angels
The Angels went into Chicago on a five-game winning streak.
They extended the streak to six with a win in game one but only ended up splitting the four games after losing on Monday, 3–0.
Mike Trout played the designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Shohei Ohtani didn’t start and went 0-for-1 in a pinch-hit appearance.
Patrick Sandoval pitched well (6 IP, 3 runs) but Dylan Cease was even better for the White Sox. Cease gave up one hit and struck out 11 in seven shutout innings.
Noah Syndergaard missed his last start with an illness so he will go into this outing at Fenway Park with some extra rest, having not appeared in a game since April 23.
He has pitched into the sixth inning in each of his three starts for the Angels and given up a total of four earned runs with 11 strikeouts, four walks, and no home runs.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox had Monday off after losing all three series on their most recent road trip.
Even worse for Boston, all three opponents were in division. The Red Sox sit 7.5 games back in the AL East, just a half-game better than Baltimore.
Phillips Valdez got hit hard again in relief Sunday. He has given up seven earned runs in his last two appearances.
He had an opportunity to pitch in some higher-leverage spots because of the inconsistency from Matt Barnes and Jake Diekman in Boston’s bullpen.
With Garrett Whitlock staying in the rotation for now, Boston will continue to look for bullpen help both from those who have struggled so far this season and those who have yet to have much of a chance.
Michael Wacha has been a bright spot in Boston’s pitching staff in 2022. He won his second consecutive start last week in Toronto, giving up just one run in six solid innings of work.
He’s given up four runs in 20 innings. He’s struck out 17 batters and allowed just two home runs.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Angels are 6-0 in their last 6 games as a favorite.
- Head to Head: Angels are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in Boston.
- Head to Head: Angels are 6-13 in the last 19 meetings.
- Head to Head: Under is 5-1-1 in the last 7 meetings.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction:
Boston has not played well early on this season but it isn’t necessarily far away from last year’s level either.
The lineup is healthy and Wacha, for one, has been excellent.
The bullpen is a concern but a return home after a long road trip should give the Red Sox a little bump here.
They should not be underdogs in this spot. Take Boston to win this game as the home underdog.
