The Dodgers will begin their road trip, as they first head to Cincinnati to take on the Reds on Tuesday evening.
Tony Gonsolin and Tyler Mahle are the expected starters in this one.
LA is a huge road favorite in this one and the total is sitting at 9.5. It did open at 10 and has been bet down.
LA Dodgers
There is no question that the Dodgers started off the year very strong and are still a very good team, but they have not been playing their best ball of late and it is something to take note of.
Look, I am not going to sit here and say they have been terrible, but there is no question they have not been themselves for a little while and it does have to be a little concerning for them.
When a team has the kinds of expectations this group had heading into the season, people just feel they will rip off wins and will not have any bumps in the road. In most cases, there is always some sort of adversity that even the best teams have to deal with.
Right now, a key issue for Los Angeles is injuries. Both Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw are sidelined with injuries and so is Mookie Betts. Given who they are, they can still have some success without those guys, but they will need them all back if they are going to make it where they want to.
I have been impressed with some of the other pitchers in their rotation. Gosnolin and Anderson have both been very impressive and it will be interesting to see how they do for the rest of the year. Also, despite not always going very deep, Urias has been solid.
This has not generally been criticism of theirs in the past, but the bullpen has been a bit shaky. They do have big arms out there, but it would be nice to see them be more consistent.
The Dodgers are coming off a disappointing series against Cleveland over the weekend, where they dropped 2 of 3 games. They did win 7-1 in game 2, but I still walked away from those games thinking they could have been better. They will once again get a chance to face a team they should beat in Cincinnati.
Tony Gonsolin will be getting the ball here and not only has he been the most reliable starter on this team, but he has been one of the best in baseball. He comes into play with a record of 8-0 and an ERA of 1.42. He might not be a guy who is overly flashy out there, but he does deserve a lot of credit for what he has done so far.
Cincinnati Reds
However you look at it, this season has not been a good one for the Reds and that does not look like it is going to change much.
Asides from the wins not piling up a lot, they are not even putting out an inspiring product on the field. Given where they are in the season, it is definitely reasonable to wonder if they are checked out and are not as focused as they should be.
This team would not be considered a disappointment if people expected them to be a bottom feeder this season, but that was not the case. There were at least realistic expectations that they could be a solid team in 2022.
Based on who they have, it is not as if they are talentless. They do have some good players mixed in there and should be better than 20 games below .500.
At the moment, they are in the basement of the NL Central with a record of 23-43. Milwaukee leads them by 14.5 games now and you would only expect that number to increase as the season goes on.
When there is a ball club playing as poorly as they have, there are a lot of reasons as to why. For them, the pitching has been bad, the offense has not given them consistent production, and they play in a division/league where a lot of teams can expose those weaknesses.
A good example of a team that can take advantage of those flaws is the Dodgers. If the Reds are not sharp in this series, it could end up being very ugly for them.
Cincinnati will be turning to Tyler Mahle and he is a guy that frankly has disappointed thus far. His team expected him to be better than what he has been and he simply has not pitched well on a regular enough basis for them.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Dodgers are 47-11 in their last 58 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- The Dodgers are 43-19 in their last 62 games following an off day.
- The Reds are 8-17 in their last 25 games as a home underdog.
- The Reds are 3-9 in their last 12 games vs. a right-handed starter.
LA Dodgers vs. Cincinnati Reds MLB Prediction:
The Dodgers would admit they could be playing a lot better and this is a good series for them to get back on track.
LA is the better team with more depth here and I just feel they will be too much for this Cincinnati club to handle.
Whenever Gonsolin is on the mound, his team should feel confident in their chances. I look for him to keep up his strong pitching and for the Dodgers to get to Mahle and the pen.
I like the Dodgers laying the runs here.
