Tony Gonsolin will be opposed by Spencer Strider in this contest.
LA Dodgers
The Dodgers have played well this season, but they wanted more than that. Given who they have on their roster, this is a team that wanted to be great and that has not happened yet.
Just like anyone else, we have seen that these guys are vulnerable depending on the day. I do not think it is anything for fans to get crazy over, but they have some flaws and those have been exposed from time to time this season.
Although the pitching has been pretty strong this season, there is doubt there are some questions with the rotation and pen. Clearly, other starters have pitched well, but they still are going to need to get Kershaw and Buehler back out there and ready to perform.
I would not say that it is a weakness of theirs, but the bullpen has been shaky at times this season and has cost them. A perfect example of that is what happened in the loss on Saturday with Brusdar Graterol, who allowed 2 earned runs.
Putting guys out there who throw hard is not the only answer when it comes to a pen and they have found that out. Being able to locate your pitches and having a good pitch mix is still very important in today’s game.
Los Angeles started off the series with Atlanta they would have liked on Friday, but they did not repeat that on Saturday with a 5-3 loss. It was a game where they had chances to win but just did not execute enough when it mattered most.
For as good as the offense is for the Dodgers, they did not do a hell of a lot against Max Fried in their game. He is a very good hurler, but it would have been nice to see them do more against a guy they have hit well before.
Getting the ball in the final game of the series is the most reliable starter on this staff. Tony Gonsolin is a legit Cy Young contender and he will look to keep up his great pitching in this one.
Atlanta Braves
Boy, do the Braves look like a totally different team now than they did at the beginning of the season. It truly has been impressive.
Given what they did a year ago and the players they still have on this team, you had to expect they would have some sort of turnaround, but there was no guarantee it would happen.
Early on in the season, Atlanta was a team that did not have a ton of urgency in their play. They did a lot of trading wins and losses and frankly, they were not playing very well at all.
In this span of them playing better, they have been able to get strong pitching and strong offense. It took a while for the offense to get going this year, but now they are in a clear groove and do not appear to be losing that anytime soon.
Just a while ago, it would have seemed like a crazy thing to say that the Braves have a shot to win their division, but it is a very real possibility at the moment. The Mets seemed like they were going to run away with the division, but that is no longer the case.
At the moment, Atlanta holds a record of 42-31 and they trail New York by 5 games. It still will not be easy to get to the top, but the chances of it happening do seem more realistic.
With the series being split in the first two games, it would be a big statement if they won on Sunday and took the series from the Dodgers. If they follow a similar approach to game 2, then they certainly could do so.
Spencer Strider will be getting the ball here and he has been pretty good so far. The right-hander is currently 3-1 with an ERA of 3.78 and will look to keep up what Fried did in the previous game.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Dodgers are 55-24 in their last 79 Sunday games.
- The Dodgers are 4-1 in their last 5 road games.
- The Braves are 11-2 in their last 13 home games.
- The Braves are 1-4 in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
LA Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
The Dodgers did not play their best ball in game 2, but I do see them bouncing back here. This is one where they match up well.
With Gonsolin on the mound, they should always feel good with their chances, and for good reason. This is a hard lineup to contain, but I do see him keeping up his quality pitching on Sunday.
I could certainly see Strider being solid here, but I expect LA to do enough against him to get the job done.
Give me the Dodgers as a short favorite on the road.
