Los Angeles is a very big favorite on the road and the total is sitting at 9.5. It opened at 9 but has since crept up.
LA Dodgers
The Dodgers have played quite well this season. They are definitely one of the best teams in baseball at the moment.
Unless something crazy happens, their high level of play will only continue as we get deeper into the season. They are really too talented on both sides of the field for that not to happen.
The reason for their success so far has not been very hard to figure out. They have gotten very strong pitching both from the rotation and pen and the offense has been as advertised. When those are combined, it is realistic to expect a team to do a lot of winning.
The one area of this team that has to get better in my eye is the back end of the rotation. With Kershaw and Heaney sidelined, people like Anderson or White need to step up. Even when Heaney is back, they could certainly use another quality starter in that group.
Even with the Dodgers playing very well, the Padres have been quite good as well and they only trail them by 1.5 games. And of course, you cannot forget about the Giants. As always, it will be fun to see how this division shakes out when all is said and done.
Earlier in the week, this team won two games out of three from the Nationals. The only downside in that series is them getting blanked 1-0 in the finale. When facing a team like that, those sorts of things cannot happen.
Julio Urias went 6 innings and allowed just 1 earned run in their loss on Wednesday. That did not matter because his offense was nowhere to be found. I would certainly expect that to change in this series with Arizona.
Mitch White will get the ball here and it is hard to know what to expect from him. He needs to at least give his team some sort of length.
Arizona Diamondbacks
So far, the Diamondbacks have been one of the more surprising teams in baseball. I do not think anyone had them playing as they have been.
A common belief around the league is that they were going to once again be a bottom feeder in the NL. So far, that has not been the case.
Arizona has certainly held its own in what is a loaded NL West. They are 4th in the division and trail by 7 games. It was certainly realistic to expect them to trail by 15+ games at this point in the season.
This series with the Dodgers is going to be a huge one for them. They did have some success against them in the desert but did not look very good against them in LA. If they were able to win this series, it would certainly be a big statement.
To me, this is a game where the Snakes need to take advantage of what the Dodgers are giving them. We know Los Angeles starting with Mitch White is not ideal but it is what they have to do. With him on the mound, the D’backs ought to feel good with their chances.
Arizona swept a mini-series with the Royals on Monday and Tuesday and will look to keep that up here. Of course, the level of the team they are facing now is much higher but their approach should be the same.
For as good as the offense was in the Kansas City series, the pitching could have been a lot better. With this potent offense of the Dodgers, it is very important that the pitching staff is on their game or it could be an ugly one for them.
Humberto Castellanos will be getting the ball in the opener of this series. His record of 3-1 is good but the ERA of 4.29 is certainly higher than where he would like it to be. In his career, he has had mixed results with the Dodgers.

Shortly after a game in which they got shut out, the offense for the Dodgers has to get back on track. This game and really, this series is a good opportunity for that to happen.
In this game, I just trust the lineup for the Dodgers more than anything. I look for them to have some success against Castellanos and then get into that pen of Arizona.
Mitch White certainly did not look very good in his outing with the Phillies but I do feel he can be better here. Listen, I am not looking for a gem out of him but just for him to give more length and be more effective. If he does that to go along with the LA bullpen, his team should be in good shape.
Give me the Dodgers laying the runs on the road.
