The Angels will be on the road to start a series with the Rays on Monday evening.
Tucker Davidson and Jeffrey Springs are the opposing hurlers in this contest.
In this spot, Tampa Bay is a very big home favorite which makes sense here. I have seen most spots show a total of 7, but some have ticked up to 7.5.
LA Angels
The Angels were not able to do a lot in their last series with the Tigers as they dropped the last two games and lost the series with Detroit.
Heading into these games, they had a chance to play well against a team that has been bad all season long, but they just were not able to get enough execution on either side of the field to get that done.
In the 4-0 loss on Sunday, starter Shohei Ohtani went four innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs. He did eventually leave the game due to a stomach virus, but the damage was already done.
Although he did not have his best stuff, the offense for the Halos also cannot be let off the hook here because they totally disappeared and did not do a thing on offense.
Eduardo Rodgriguez came back and mowed them down for five innings and the bullpen did the same thing when he left. Those are the sorts of things that are just not acceptable with this ball club.
LA did scatter seven hits around there, but you never felt like it was going to lead to much. There was really not any rhythm for them on that side of the ball all day long and they only managed to score four runs in the series.
It will only get harder for the Angels when they hit the road to take on the Rays who will present them with a ton of challenges. If they play in a similar manner to the Tigers series, it could be pretty bad for them.
Tucker Davidson will start things off for them in this one and he does not have great overall numbers, but he is coming off of a strong outing against the Twins and will look to build off of that when he faces this tough offense.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays knew they had a very good opportunity to play some good baseball in their last series and they did just that as they took three of four from the Royals.
It was pretty clear they were not going against some great team, but they still managed to be productive on both sides of the field and get the job done more times than not.
Coming into this contest, Tampa Bay is 7-3 in their last 10 games and they have been pretty impressive of late. There have been times this season where they have skidded, but they do appear to be headed more in the right direction.
Ryan Yarbrough was very effective in the 3-2 win on Sunday as he went 4.1 innings and did not allow an earned run while punching out five batters. He did a good job of keeping the opposition off balance and the bullpen also stepped up for them.
The pitching was sharp for this group in the series with Kansas City as they allowed a total of eight runs in four games. No matter who it is you are facing, that is not an easy thing to do.
At the moment, the Rays hold a record of 65-55 which is the same as the Blue Jays. Both of those teams trail the Yankees by eight games but will be playing in the postseason unless there is some sort of major collapse down the stretch.
This series with the Angels is one of those where the Rays really have to capitalize and do some damage. They are facing off with a very beatable team and given where they are in the season, it would be a bad look if they flopped against them.
Getting the ball to start things off with Los Angeles is Jeffrey Springs and he pitched well in his last outing against the Yankees and frankly, he has been impressive this season no matter what role he has been in.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Angels are 7-20 in their last 27 during game 1 of a series.
- The over is 5-1-1 in the Angels’ last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Rays are 5-1 in their last 6 games on astroturf.
- The over is 7-3 in Rays’ last 10 games vs. a lefty.
LA Angels vs. Tampa Bay Rays MLB Prediction:
This is a game where I do not have a ton of confidence in the Angels and I have a hard time seeing them start off on the right foot.
Davidson was better last time out, but he has had his struggles this season and I do not love him or this bullpen in this spot where they have to contain this offense.
I would expect Springs and the relievers to mostly be solid on Monday, but the Angels do have the ability to get a few off of them when all is said and done.
In this spot, give me the over of 7.
