The Angels and Rays will be ending their series on Sunday afternoon from Truist Park in Atlanta.
Reid Detmers will be going up against Ian Anderson in this contest.
It is no real surprise that the Bravos are such a big favorite in this one. The total opened at 8.5 and is now up to 9 in most spots.
LA Angels
The Angels just keep on playing like a lot of people thought they would. Forget the hot start they got off to, it was understood they would crash back to reality, and boy has that been the case.
There was a lot of hype with this group before the season, which is the case often, but they yet again have not been able to make the most out of what they have. It has once again been a disaster for this organization and it will likely only get worse as the season goes on.
Listen, people can talk all they want about how they have two of the best players in the sport, but a lot of them fail to realize that it just simply is not enough. Baseball is not like other sports where two great players can just lead a ball club.
Something that has been clear about this team for a while and it has once again been put on display this season is their inability to build players around their two best guys. Los Angeles should be doing everything in their power to acquire talent that could be solid pieces around Trout and Ohtani and they simply have not done that.
Some people got fooled and thought this team could be “competitive” in the AL West, but that has been the furthest thing from the truth. In 2022, they are right back where they have been for years and they trail the Astros by 23.5 games.
After dropping 7-2 to the Braves on Sunday, the Angels have now lost 5 in a row and they are 1-9 in their last 10 games. If it were other teams, I would feel confident they would get back into a groove, but I cannot say that about this squad.
In the first two games of this series, Atlanta has made it very clear they are just the better team in every possible way. The poor pitching for Los Angeles has been put on full display and so has the lack of offense. A team cannot expect to win games when those are the case.
Reid Detmers will be getting the start in the finale and he has shown glimpses of being capable at times this year, but I have not seen it enough. He will have a lot on his plate when he tries to keep this lineup in check.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves have been an impressive team this season and they just keep on playing well. It is hard for me not to like the direction they are headed in right about now.
For a while now, this team has played like a lot of people thought they would. It was understood the slow start they got off to, but that does appear to be behind them.
When this team is really rolling, they do a lot of things very well and they have the ability to be quite dangerous. I would certainly describe them as a balanced ball club.
Although the offense has not been as dominant as it was expected, they are still very good in that category. Also, the bullpen has been a true strength of theirs and the starting pitching has been solid. There is no question this is one of the best teams in the NL at the moment.
It was a little bit ago that winning the NL East did not seem possible, but Atlanta has done a very good job of inching closer to the Mets. After the Braves win on Saturday, they now trail New York by just half a game. I am really excited to see how that division shakes out for the rest of the season.
Coming out of the all-star break, there is no question this series with the Angels was a good matchup for Atlanta. They needed a team to really play well against and so far, they have gotten that.
Kyle Wright went 6 innings while allowing 2 earned runs and punching out 8 batters in the win on Saturday. Some other guys might get more attention, but this kid continues to show what kind of a pitcher he is.
Ian Anderson gets the ball on Sunday and I do not entirely know what to make of him. At times he has the ability to be effective, but there have also been times when he has gotten hit very hard. No matter how anybody tries to spin it, an ERA of 4.79 is just not good enough.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Angels are 17-35 in their last 52 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Angels are 15-41 in their last 56 overall.
- The Braves are 20-7 in their last 27 home games.
- The Braves are 5-2 in their last 7 vs. the AL West.
LA Angels vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
The Braves have been able to get strong offense and pitching in the first two games of this series. It is hard to argue with that approach.
Neither one of these pitchers gives me a ton of hope, but I just trust the Braves as a team a lot more in this spot.
Anderson might not be great here, but his team is more than capable of doing damage against Detmers and that bullpen.
I like the Braves on the Runline here.
