The Astros and Rangers will be starting a series on Monday, April 25th.
Framber Valdez will be going up against Dane Dunning here.
Houston is a decent favorite right now on the road.
Houston Astros
The Astros have not exactly lit the world on fire to start this season but you do not get the sense from them that it is going to be an issue. In all likelihood, they will figure it out.
Through the first 15 games of a season, no team wants to be below.500 but they understand how long the season is. With the group of guys they have on their roster to go along with their manager, it would really shock me if they were not competing for their division when all is said and done.
Right now, they are in 4th place in the AL West. The Mariners lead them by 2.5 games with a record of 10-6.
One thing that is a little concerning about them so far is how they have played against some of the better teams. They can get stronger in that department as the year goes on but it is certainly something to keep an eye on.
The Blue Jays came into Houston and beat them two games out of three over the weekend. Each game was a close one as they were decided by just one run.
Houston was able to win the finale of the series over Toronto by a score of 8-7. That was nice to see because a sweep at the hand of the Jays would not have looked good for them, even with it being still April.
Luis Garcia went 6 innings and allowed 5 earned runs in their win on Sunday. He did get hit around a bit but he was able to give his team good length and kept them in the ball game.
Framber Valdez will look to start off the series with the Rangers well when he gets the ball on Monday. He has seen mixed results this season with a 1-1 record and an ERA over 4.
Texas Rangers
Another year and it seems like the Rangers are destined for an awful lot of failure. What’s new, right?
I understand that they went out there and got guys like Seager, Semien, and Gray, but is that really going to push the needle that much to the point where they are a serious contender in a super competitive AL? For this year, that answer is a clear no.
Listen, it is very plausible that they could get marginally better compared to past seasons and maybe win in the mid to high 70s. Cracking 80 would be a miracle for me, quite frankly.
There is no question that they have some pieces on their roster for years to come and they are on the right path to a degree but they still have an awful lot of work to do. Forget being a threat in the AL, they are going to have a hard enough time being a threat in their own division.
This series with the Astros will be a big test for them and I want to see how they handle it. If they can look good and win some games over their divisional rival who is better than them, maybe they have some hope. This is a team that has to show me what they can do before I can start singing their praises.
Texas went into Oakland and took two games out of three from the A’s in their most recent series. For them, it does not matter who they are playing, they will always take winning a series.
The frustrating loss for them came on Sunday when the offense decided to just not show up. Oakland blanked them 2-0 in that game, which is something that really should not be happening.
The pitching was solid for them over the weekend and that will have to continue to be the case against this dangerous Astros lineup. Dane Dunning will have the tall task of keeping them at bay in game #1.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Astros are 5-1 in their last 6 Monday games.
- The Astros are 97-41 in their last 138 during game 1 of a series.
- The Rangers are 5-11 in their last 16 overall.
- The Rangers are 1-4 in their last 5 games following a loss.
Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers MLB Prediction:
After a tough series with the Blue Jays, this is a series that the Astros really have to get right in and I look for them to do so.
Certainly, no game is guaranteed but I look for Houston to just get the job done against an opponent they have had a lot of success over lately.
As the game gets going, I see the offense for the Stros being too much for Dunning and co. to handle and I can see Valdez having a solid outing here.
There is some juice here, but I will lay the Moneyline with the away team here.
