Houston Astros
I picked the Astros to cover just about any runline the books will offer on both Friday and Saturday with Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole on the mound, respectively. We got off to a good start on Friday with a 7–2 win that certainly covered most, if not all, runlines.
Collin McHugh isn’t the name Verlander is, nor Cole, but he’s been pretty darn good ever since the Astros picked him off the scrap heap in 2013 (ahead of the 2014 season). With the exception of 2017, when he came back from injury to play a role in the World Series run, McHugh has been stellar.
He hasn’t shown any signs of having a difficult time in his transition back to being a starter this season. In four starts, he’s logged 23 innings and has his hits per nine under under five, his walks under three, his strikeouts over ten, and an ERA just under two.
Texas Rangers
Shelby Miller ought to be a big underdog in this game, for he’s outmatched. None of his three starts have been even adequate — his most recent was his best when he pitched into the fifth inning and gave up six hits, three walks, and four runs — and Houston has already seen him once in the early going.
Miller only allowed two runs in that start but gave up six hits, walked five, hit a batter and didn’t finish the fourth inning. It doesn’t look like he’s going to be up in the big leagues for much longer.
