The Astros and Mariners will be squaring off for the second game of their series on Saturday afternoon.
Justin Verlander and Logan Gilbert will be the opposing starters here and that could definitely make for a very good duel.
At the moment, Houston is laying a short price on the road with a total of 7.
Houston Astros
Since the play has resumed after the All-Star break, the Astros have not missed a beat and they keep on looking like one of the best teams in the sport.
All season long, this has been a very impressive team and they have gotten sharper as the season has gone on. I would expect them to keep up their strong play as the season gets deeper.
For a while, it was understood that Houston was going to win the AL West, but now they are in the conversation to have the best record in the AL, which simply did not seem all that reasonable a little while ago given how well the Yankees had played.
Coming into this contest, the Astros hold a record of 62-32 and they lead the Mariners by 11 games. The division was a lot closer earlier on the season, but it has been locked up for some time now.
As I have seen this team play all season long, it is no surprise that they have a lot of success. They are a very balanced team and they have been able to remain consistent even in some rougher patches. Given the kind of roster they have to go along with their manager, that is really not all that surprising.
Before this series with their divisional rival, Houston once again looked impressive against the Yankees and swept them in a two-game set on Thursday by scores of 3-2 and 7-5. Without a doubt, it would be a very interesting series if those teams ended up squaring off in the playoffs.
There is no question that this series with Seattle was not going to be an easy one, but the Astros started it off just how they would have liked with a 5-2 victory. Jose Urquidy once again delivered a strong outing on Friday and his team was able to have some pretty good success against Marco Gonzales. Overall, it was a solid team victory for them over a team that had not seemed to be losing.
Justin Verlander will be getting the ball in this one and he has been excellent all season long. Look, there are a lot of very good pitchers in the AL, but I feel he has been the best of them all, and really, the Cy Young is his to lose at this point in the season.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners finally lost a game, but that certainly does not take away what they had been able to do before that where they really turned their season around.
It was not all that long ago that this team was seriously underperforming and there were questions if they would ever figure out their season. They have definitely gotten back in the mix and it will be interesting to see if they will be able to sustain it throughout the rest of the season.
I would not say Seattle is some super-talented team, but they do have plenty of good players and it makes sense they now have the record they do. Unless they were flat for all of 2022, they were eventually going to start playing some more consistent ball.
Even with their win streak and their stretches of great play, they are still nowhere near the Astros in the standings, which just shows the dominance that Houston has had all season long. In the times they have been able to cut the deficit to single digits, winning the West just never seemed like a reasonable thing for this group.
As well as these guys have played of late, I still view them as incomplete and I would like to see them add a few more players to bolster their roster. I feel that they could definitely use a starter and reliever to make themselves even more of a threat in the AL.
It was understood that this series with the Astros was going to be a challenge for the Mariners and they did not start it off the way they would have liked. The offense just was not enough against what is a very good pitching staff.
All season long, Houston has not exactly been a good matchup for Seattle and it is not very surprising. It is not to say the M’s cannot beat them on a given day, but it is very clear who the better and deeper team is at the moment.
Next up in the rotation is Logan Gilbert and like Verlander, he has also looked quite sharp this season. Something I do wonder is how he will respond to a heavier workload, but the kid has been as advertised and it will be very important that he has a strong second half to lead his team on the pitching side of things.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Astros are 12-2 in their last 14 games against a right-handed starter.
- The Astros are 7-2 in their last 9 during game 2 of a series.
- The Mariners are 22-4 in their last 26 games on grass.
- The Mariners are 10-1 in their last 11 during game 2 of a series.
Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction:
This is a very good pitching matchup, but I do have to give the edge to Verlander in this spot, and I feel he will lead his team to victory.
I can see this turning out to be a close one, but I do have more trust in the Astros here. They are the better team and I would rather back them in a spot like this.
A big component of this game is the bullpen and when the game gets into the hands of the pen, I do give the advantage to Houston.
I like the Astros as the short favorite on the road in this spot.
