The Astros will be in Seattle to start a series with the Mariners on Friday, May 27th.
Justin Verlander and Chris Flexen are the starters in this one.
Houston is a large favorite in this one with the total sitting at 7 runs.
Houston Astros
The Astros might not be getting as much attention as some other teams but they have been quite good. Their high level of play is really not all that surprising.
Going into the season, it was expected that this would be one of the best teams in the AL and so far, that has been the case. Even after what was a slow start by their standards, they have certainly gotten back on the right track.
With some of the key players that are no longer on this team, this might not look like a vintage Houston team but that does not mean they are devoid of talent. There are plenty of players on both sides of the field that are more than capable and are contributing to their success.
So far, the Stros have gotten a good mix of pitching and hitting which is always what a team would want. I would not say they are great in either category but they are certainly not lacking.
I like some of the youth that they have in their rotation and pen but I think they really need to add a few veteran arms to their staff. It would be nice to see another proven starter be in there with Verlander and then adding some bullpen depth is never a bad thing no matter what team it is.
After they just won the series with Cleveland, this series with Seattle is one that the Stros need to take advantage of. I would not necessarily call the Mariners a get-right team but they are a club that they should be able to do their job against.
For as well as Houston has played, they know they cannot let up at all. The Angels have also been impressive and there are not a ton of games that separate those two in the West.
Justin Verlander will be on the hill for the opener and boy oh boy, has he been excellent. He truly looks like the Detroit JV. Coming into this contest, he is 6-1 with a minuscule ERA of 1.22.
Seattle Mariners
To be totally honest and fair here, the Mariners have been a disappointment thus far. There is really no other way to slice that one.
First off, let us not forget the start this team got off to. They began very well but have totally taken a cliff dive since then and do not appear to be getting back to what they were.
After a 2021 season in which they missed the playoffs but were still quite competitive, people were very high on this team for 2022 and thought they would do a lot. So far, they have let a lot of people down.
With the team they have, I feel they are in a weird spot. They are not overly talented but they are also not a bottom feeder. The way that I project them based on what they have done so far is a middling team and we know the sad reality of being stuck in sports purgatory.
Seattle has to acknowledge that there are two teams in their division that are a lot better than they are. Until they truly go out there and spend serious money to get high-end talent, it will be more of the same. They clearly have some pieces to build around on both sides of the diamond but it is obviously nowhere near what you need to be a threat.
This club has already squared off with the Astros in a few series and things have not gone very well for the M’s. They would be able to make a statement if they could win this series but they are going to be in for a very big challenge here.
Regardless of who their next opponent is, they have to do better than what they have been doing recently. The fact that they just dropped 2 games of 3 from an A’s team that is clearly in rebuild mode should be embarrassing to their franchise.
Chris Flexen will get the nod here and he was a guy who was expected to take even a step further this season but has instead gone backward. He is 1-6 with an ERA of 4.98 and has shown no signs of his 2021 success.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Astros are 5-0 in their last 5 games after scoring 2 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Astros are 21-5 in their last 26 games on grass.
- The Mariners are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.
- The Mariners are 7-21 in their last 28 games.
Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction:
The Astros have been playing some good ball and they know this series is a good matchup for them. I expect their strong play to keep up here.
For as impressive as Verlander has been in his career and this season, he is not the type of guy to take his opponents lightly. He treats every one of them seriously and knows what he needs to do to be effective.
I look for him to keep up his strong pitching and for the Houston bats to get to Flexen and the pen. They have hit him well before and I look for that keep up here.
This is a game where I see some offense and I like the over.
