The Astros will be taking on the Twins on Wednesday, May 11th.
Jose Urquidy and Chris Archer are your probable starters in this one.
Houston is a favorite on the road here with the total set at 8.5.
The Astros have played pretty well this season and they have seemed to find it more so recently. It was only a matter of time for this team.
They did not exactly get off to the best start ever but you never sensed any worry with them. Houston knows they are a veteran team with plenty of talent and they would eventually get things rolling.
This is a team that might not be getting talked about as much as some others in the AL but I still feel they are a legit club and will be a threat come playoff time. They certainly have the tools to do so and I expect them to find their rhythm even more so as the year goes on.
With certain players that are no longer on this roster, it might not seem like a vintage Stros team but they still have a very solid group. They are far from a team that has no talent.
In terms of their strengths, I would still say that the offensive side is their biggest one. That is the side of the ball that I would trust them the most on.
In terms of their pitching, I would not say that it is lacking but it could use some depth. The rotation is solid but could use a little more and the bullpen is hit or miss. To me, that area of their game will have to get bolstered if they want to be a legit contender and not just a threat.
Houston started off the series with the Twins on the right path with a 5-0 win on Tuesday. Justin Verlander pitched an excellent 8 innings and the offense did their thing against Joe Ryan. It is hard to argue with that formula.
Jose Urquidy is next up in the rotation and he will look to be sharper than he has been. The record is fine but the ERA is certainly higher than he would want it to be.
After what was certainly a down year for the Twins a year ago, they appear to be on the right track this season. Of course, there are an awful lot of games to be played but they should at least like their direction.
The issue for them a year ago was they never seemed to be able to get out of their way. Whether they were playing down to their competition, blowing leads, not getting quality starts from their pitchers, etc., not of it was very good and they hope that stays in the past.
As I look at their roster, I do not feel their early success is all smoke and mirrors. I think they have a fairly powerful lineup with solid pitching. It will be interesting to see where that gets them.
Listen, I am not saying they are a team that is totally loaded with front-end talent on both sides of the field like the Dodgers. I think they have enough to be relevant and make the playoffs but it would be hard for me to envision a deep playoff run.
I feel they could use a few established hitters in that lineup as well as some more talented arms in both the pen and rotation. What they have now will get them to a certain point but not over the hump.
This series with the Astros is a big test for this group. For a while now, Houston has been the standard in the AL and it would sure be a nice sign to see the Twinkies have some success against them.
Joe Ryan really struggled with his command on Tuesday as he allowed 5 walks. He was only able to go 4 innings but still allowed 4 earned runs. When you give that many bases on balls to a squad such as this, you are asking for trouble.
After they got blanked in the opener, Chris Archer will look to get his team back in the win column on Wednesday night. The right-hander does not have a decision yet and holds an ERA of 3.26.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Astros are 11-0 in their last 11 games on grass.
- The Astros are 7-0 in their last 7 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
- The Twins are 2-5 in their last 7 games as a home underdog.
- The Twins are 9-1 in their last 10 home games.
Houston Astros vs. Minnesota Twins MLB Prediction:
Houston did just what they were looking for in the opener and will look to carry that over into game two. They certainly should like their chances.
Even with the Twins being improved, I still give the edge to the Astros. I feel they have the advantage both in terms of starting pitcher and lineup here.
As noted earlier, the ERA for Urquidy is a little concerning but he is certainly capable of being effective against this lineup. Even if Houston does not smoke Archer, I feel they can do enough against him and that bullpen to secure the victory.
With the juice not being too high here, I will lay the 125 with the away team.
