The Houston Astros will be on the road to take on the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, April 7th for opening day.
The pitching matchup features Framber Valdez going up against Shohei Ohtani.
This will be the first of nineteen times that these divisional rivals will meet this year.
Houston Astros
The Astros are once again looking to have a strong season after they ended going up 95-67 a year ago and lost in the World Series.
Yes, they still have a very talented roster, but one key loss for them is shortstop Carlos Correa, who is now with the Twins. Losing a bat and glove like that is not easy for anyone to deal with, no matter how good they are.
As far as pitching goes, one key guy to have back and healthy is Justin Verlander, who missed the whole season last year with an arm injury.
The hurler who will be going on Thursday is Framber Valdez, who has proven to be a bright young arm in this league.
in the 2021, season Valdez ended up going 11-6 with an ERA of 3.14. He will look to build off of that during this campaign.
If you followed baseball a year ago, you know how good this Houston offense was. They ranked first across the majors, scoring 5.33 runs per game.
The pithcing was also strong last year, as they allowed 3.76 runs per game. Given the kind of offensive firepower in baseball, that is certainly no easy task.
It is no surprise that the Stros are the favorite to win the West and some people’s pick to win it all. Regardless of what you may think about them, they have a helluva team.
Los Angeles Angeles
Inconsistency has plagued the Angels for a long time now and that was no different a year ago.
Los Angeles ended up going 77-85, which cleary is not good enough, no matter what division you play in.
Although 2021 was not what they wanted, there is reason for optimism regarding this season for them.
Not only do they have Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, who are two generational talents, they also added Noah Syndergaard and Michael Lorenzen, who are two nice pieces to their rotation.
Given the kind of names that are on this roster, it would be a real shame for them if they sqauanderd yet another season.
Shohei Ohtani, who not only can hit like a maniac, is also a very skilled pitcher. Seeing a guy who can do both is something that you see all the time, which is why it is cool to see it happening now
Ohtani finished last year going 9-2 with an ERA of 3.18. I am curious to see how he would do if he pitched more games in a season, but I have no doubt he would put up impressive numbers.
Needless to say, it would be nice for this team to start off the year in good fashion over a team they are going to be saying a whole lot of and one frankly, they have not had a lot of success against over the last multiple years.

Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels MLB Prediction:
Listen, the Angels are a better team than in past years, but the Astros are still the standard in the American League West.
I feel really good with this Houston group at the moment and I expect them to put forth a strong effort in game 1.
It cleary will not be easy, but I trust the bats for the Astros to do enough against Ohtani and get into a bullpen for LA that although improved, is by no means great.
I like Houston as the underdog here.
