The Astros and Angels will be playing the first game of their series on Tuesday, July 12th.
Currently, Houston is a pretty small favorite on the road with a total of 8.5. It did open at 7.5 and has been bet up.
Luis Garcia will be facing Noah Syndergaard in this one.
Houston Astros
The Astros have been playing like the team people thought they would for a while now and it is hard to imagine them all of a sudden slowing down.
As we are almost in the middle of July, it is very clear who the best team in the AL is and I think the same can be said for who the second-best team is.
I get there are some other good teams out there and it is more than a two-team race, but it is very clear Houston is the biggest threat to New York and frankly, I do not think it is very close.
This is a team that is very balanced and they know how to use their strengths to their advantage. When they are truly locked in, there is no doubt in my mind that they would be a tough matchup for any team in the league.
The Stros have been a very consistent team throughout the season and that can be shown by their record of 56-29. Even with the Mariners being red hot and winning 9 of their last 10 games, they still trail Houston by 12 games, and the division is nowhere near being in reach.
Over the weekend, this crew was able to win the series against the A’s and they really did what they had to do there. The offense produced well in that series and the pitching was effective, which is all a manager can ask for no matter what kind of team they are going against.
This series with the Angels is not what I would call an easy one, but it is one the Astros should feel good about. They know they are a much better team and if they are on their game, they should expect to get some good results.
It starts with Luis Garcia on Tuesday evening and he has been one of many impressive young arms on this team. He did not start off the season in the best way, but he has looked a lot sharper as the year has gone on and they are going to need him to keep that up.
LA Angels
Another season and the Angels are nowhere near contention. The idea of them playing meaningful baseball in the summer months must seem like a foreign concept.
Anyone that is truly surprised with them crashing back to earth and being the perpetual below-average team that they are should not be. Fast start or not, it was inevitable that this was going to happen and it really only came down to when.
Months ago, I acknowledged that yes, this team is playing well, but also said it would not shock me in the least if they reverted back to their old ways and were not all that competitive. Sure, I never saw them firing Maddon or going through that crazy losing streak, but even with a lot of the talent they have, it was not too hard to see that they would not sustain what they were doing.
Regardless of what anyone else tries to say, this team should never be labeled as a “threat” in the AL or in the West until they can prove to be that for a sustained amount of time. People love to put teams and players in certain categories before they have even remotely shown it.
I get there was a lot of hype surrounding LA and some of that was deserved, but it really has been the same old, same old. They have proven time and time again that having two of the best players many of us will ever see is still not enough if you are lacking in other areas.
Aside from Trout and Ohtani, this is still not a team I would call very talented. Fans would hope the front office would do anything in their power to build around their two superstars, but it has been demonstrated multiple times before that being consistently relevant is not the main concern for the Halos, which is pretty sad.
Even in a season where expectations were higher than normal, they still find themselves well below .500 and they are closer to the A’s than the Astros in terms of the standings. Again, you would want to say it is surprising, but if you know anything about this team, it is the furthest thing from it.
This series with the Astros is definitely going to be a big test for them and it is hard to know what to expect from them in this one. Sure, they could elevate their game against their rival, but I would not count on that one.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Astros are 11-1 in their last 12 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Astros are 8-2 in their last 10 games following a win.
- The Angels are 20-41 in their last 61 games vs. a pitcher with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- The Angels are 6-15 in their last 21 home games.
Houston Astros vs. LA Angels MLB Prediction:
The Astros have really been rolling of late and I do not see them stopping here.
Houston is a much more complete team and they are definitely coming into this series with a lot of confidence. If they stick to how they have been playing, this is one where they should be able to take care of business.
Garcia might not have more experience, but I trust him more to deliver a quality outing in this one. Also, I have more faith in this Houston bullpen than the one for Los Angeles.
I like the Astros as the short favorite on the road.
