The American League’s final four was identical in 2017 and 2018. Last season, the Astros had to go through Boston and then New York; this season, Houston must beat Boston after Cleveland to get back to the World Series.
Leaving aside the rosters, there are two major differences between last year’s matchup with Boston, which ended in four games, and this year’s.
Of course, this series will be a best four-out-of-seven. That probably only favors the Astros and their superior pitching depth. The second difference is that the Red Sox have the home-field advantage this time around.
Last season, the Astros won each of the first two games in Houston, 8–2. They jumped out to a quick 3–0 lead at Fenway in Game 3 but Brad Peacock didn’t hold the lead and Boston ended up winning a game that stayed close until the later innings. Charlie Morton came in in Game 4 and helped eliminate the Sox.
This season, Gerrit Cole will start instead of Brad Peacock. Houston has yet to determine its starting rotation at the time I write but they have basically one decision: to give Charlie Morton his turn in the rotation or start again with Justin Verlander, who won Game 1 of the ALDS last Friday.
Boston Red Sox
These are the two winningest teams in baseball, 211 wins between the two of them in the regular season. The Red Sox won 108 of them and then eliminated the Yankees in four games, winning both in New York.
It still doesn’t feel like Boston was the better team in that series but the result was decisive and I’m starting to believe, not that the pitching is as good as Houston’s, but that it can scrap and fight and claw.
Chris Sale is going to start this game; it’s already listed. He threw into the fifth inning of Game 1 of the LDS and completed a perfect inning in the eight of Game 4. He sure looked good in the one-inning appearance.
Last season, the Stros knocked him around in Game 1 and then again in Game 4 when he came in to relieve Rick Porcello, one in Houston and one at Fenway.
But the Astros’ lineup isn’t as potent this time around because Carlos Correa isn’t hitting. He did big-time damage off of Sale last year and the Sox’ best chance to win this series exists in a world were Corea stays chilly.

Free Houston Astros vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction: the Sox take Game 1.
After last season, and coming off of the win against New York, this game will be a huge point of emphasis for Boston. I don’t think the Sox have what it takes to win four of these, but Game 1, sure.
