Detroit Tigers
Spencer Turnbull is already 26 but he’s still got rookie eligibility, despite making three starts and a relief appearance for Detroit last season.
He started this in the starting rotation and has so far made five starts, spanning twenty-six innings, with an ERA+ of 170. That’s an elite number, though his 1.30 WHIP is not. I suspect the ERA will come up as the season wears on.

With Jordan Zimmermann out for a few more weeks and both Matt Moore and Michael Fulmer out for the season, Detroit’s pitching has been tested. So far, the young arms have kept things together but my sense is things will go south for Detroit eventually. There’s still a lot of time for things to go awry.
Philadelphia Phillies
Aaron Nola signed a four-year extension worth only $45 million, despite finishing third in the Cy Young race and thirteenth in the NL MVP results a season ago as a 24 and 25-year-old.
It’s a low number for a pitcher who, theoretically, is in the prime of his career and coming off a season as fine as any pitcher in baseball. Perhaps Nola knew the production wasn’t sustainable, however.

He certainly hasn’t matched that output so far this year. He’s giving up a lot of hits, a lot of home runs, a lot of walks, and striking out just as many guys as he was last season. Through just under thirty-two innings, he’s got an 80 ERA+ but he’s somehow 2–0.
