MLB Baseball Gambling Total: O/U: 9
The Tigers and Red Sox will be squaring off in the 2nd game of their series on Tuesday night.
Detroit is a big dog in this game, which is expected. I am mostly seeing 9 as the total, but there has been some 9.5’s pop up.
Beau Brieske will be opposed by Rich Hill in this contest.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers have been absolutely brutal this season. There really is no other way to describe that one.
When I examine this team, there are not a ton of things they do well and that is concerning because they were expected to be much better than what they have done so far.
Although not great, the pitching has not been terrible and it has given them chances at times to compete. The biggest and most glaring weakness for them right now is the offense.
With a few exceptions, Detroit has been a team that simply has not hit the baseball very well. No matter what numbers you look at in terms of their offense, they are not good and they do not appear to be changing any time soon.
Again, a lot of their horrible play has been surprising because of the fact that this is not a typical Tigers team. They are not devoid of talent and have some players that should be helping them win more than they have.
It gets to the point now where if a team has a few runs on Detroit and they have at least solid pitching, they feel like they have the game secured. There is really nobody on this team that is a legit offensive threat and that is an issue for them.
Going into this series with Boston, it was understood that it would be a very hard series and the Tigers did not start off how they wanted to with a 5-2 loss. Detroit did out-hit the sox, but it did not matter when the game was over.
Tyler Faedo went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 earned runs in the loss on Monday. He was effective at times, but the pitch count eventually was just too high for him. Beau Brieske will be next up in the rotation and it would be a good sign for him to just get back into the win column.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox still remain one of the hottest teams in baseball and they are definitely headed in the right direction.
After what was a very shaky start to their campaign, they have totally turned the season around and are playing as the team people thought.
Early on in the season, I saw a team that did not seem to have any rhythm in their play and they were not playing up to their talent. As the year has gone on, I have really seen the group come together and that is something that cannot be overlooked.
Something that has been refreshing to see is different players seem to contribute on a daily basis and they are not overly reliant on certain people. Of course, Devers, Martinez, and Bogaerts have led them on the offensive side of things, but other players have also stepped up when needed and that is big for any team.
Another part of their game that cannot be ignored is the improved pitching, especially with the starters. We all know the bullpen is not a strength for Boston, so starters being able to be effective and give more length has been huge.
I have mostly been impressed with the rotation for the whole season, but the guy who has really stood out is Nick Pivetta. He is a pitcher who is clearly going out there with confidence and his results back that up. With Whitlock and Eovaldi sidelined, a lot has fallen on his plate and he has been able to deliver.
In the victory on Monday, it was Josh Winckowski that put forth the quality outing. The righty finished the day going 6.2 innings and allowing just 2 earned runs. His strikeout numbers were not very high, but he was still very effective while he was out there.
Boston will be turning to Rich Hill here and he has seen mixed results so far. He has been able to give better length at times, but there still is a concern in that area. When facing a team such as this, it is important that he is effective and does not waste pitches out there.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Tigers are 44-100 in their last 144 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Tigers are 1-8 in their last 9 games vs. the AL East.
- The Red Sox are 10-2 in their last 12 games as a favorite.
- The Red Sox are 23-9 in their last 32 overall.
Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction:
Boston started off the series how they would have liked and I see them keeping it up on Tuesday.
Hill being on the mound is a bit of a concern, but I do feel he can at least be solid against this lineup. As long as he does not totally bury his team, the Sox should feel good with their chances.
Despite Brieske pitching well at times, it has not always resulted in his team winning. I could see him being ok here, but I expect Boston to do enough against him and get into their bullpen.
Give me the Red Sox at -1.5.
