Colorado Rockies
The Rockies have certainly been one of the biggest surprises this season. It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up as the months go by.
It was certainly reasonable for people to feel they would be better this year but I do not think anyone had them playing this well. If a team were to start off this way, they would not have been the first ones to come to my mind.
Through their first 25 games of the season, Colorado has a record of 15-10 and they are 3rd in the NL West. The Dodgers lead them by just 2 games which just seems a little weird to say.
There is no question that the division they play in is very competitive and it will be hard for them to be in the mix when all is said and done. San Diego, LA, and San Francisco are all more talented than this crew, so it is going to be a very tall order for them to stay neck and neck with them all season long.
In the early going, the offense has been very productive but the pitching has not exactly been a strength of theirs. It is one thing to score a lot of runs but you also have to have the ability to keep the opponent off of the scoreboard.
The Rockies were able to take two of three from the Nationals this week. After getting smoked in the opener, they were able to take the next two contests and win the series.
After taking care of a very bad Washington team, they will once again get a chance to face off with one of the worst teams in the Diamondbacks. It is pretty clear what they need to do against them.
Colorado will turn to Kyle Freeland here and that might not make them feel so great. He has a record of 1-3 and an ERA of 4.85. This is a good opportunity for him to pitch better but nothing is for certain.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Similar to the Rockies, the Diamondbacks have also surprised me. I did not think they would have the record they do at the present time.
This is clearly a team that has a lot of work to do before they are relevant again which is why I thought they would have close to 20 losses. With a record of 13-13, they at least seem like they are representative.
When all is said and done, I do not think they will be great but it certainly is possible they will be better than they were a year ago. They need to see progress this season even if it is in baby steps.
It has been common for a while now that Arizona would be a 100+ game loser that it seems weird when they are actually playing ok ball. It certainly caught me off guard.
Just like with the Rockies, they are going to have to get better when it comes to their pitching. They do have some decent arms here and there but it is nothing that would take them over the edge.
They will definitely be tested in that area when they face off with Colorado. They have a lineup that is capable of doing some damage, so we shall see what happens there.
The Snakes went into Miami and swept the Marlins before this series. Sure, it was not against the best team in baseball but it is not very often that Arizona takes every game from any opponent.
Zach Davis is on the mound in this one and he has shown glimpses of being good but has also struggled at times. If he is on his game, he can certainly be effective, but he will have his hands full for sure.

If the Rockies want to be in the thick of things in the West this season, these are ones they must take care of. When they face a team they are just better than, losing is not accpetable.
I am not necessarily sold on Freeland being great for Colorado but I do feel their offense will be too much for Arizona to handle. The formula for them should be to get to Davies and then go to work against that bullpen.
It could be a close one but I feel the Rockies have too much for the D-Backs to handle here.
