The Pirates are the only preseason bad team that is determined not to disappoint. All the other have had some stretches.
Cleveland looks rock solid and if their offense ever decides to really show up this team can be very good.
Cleveland Indians
It is not very often that a team is last in scoring and tops in ERA but that is what Cleveland is right now. With players like Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez the offense should be better right?
Ramirez might not ever have a season like he did a couple of years ago but he is not the problem this season. Franmil Reyes was a guy the Padres kind of gave up on but this season he has been making contact and hitting the ball out of the park.
Aaron Civale is kind of like a Shane Bieber light for his ability to strike guys out and not issue many free passes. I like that even though he is a young pitcher he is economical enough with his pitches to get through 6 innings – he has in every start this season.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates are in a really tough spot. It’s not just that they are bad but where are the seeds of a good Pirates team on the horizon. The team has the lowest OPS in the league. Needless to say they need some more bats.
Josh Bell was hot in the first half last season but once the league figured him out, they really figured him out. He still has oodles of power but he makes almost no contact. He might be out of the league before you know it and then things get even bleeker for the Bucs. .
Steven Brault has been used as an opener and pitches well in that role. The one time he got whacked this season it was in relief. The Pirates have only won once with him opening though. Given they have four wins total I guess that is actually pretty good.
