Cleveland Guardians
I would say that the way the Guardians have played so far is a bit surprising. It has not been anything spectacular but it certainly has been better than what a lot of people thought to start the season.
Going into the year, the expectations were not very high for this ball club. The popular belief is that they would have a down year and would not be all that relevant.
One of the main reasons for skepticism regarding their team is their lack of depth. We know how good Bieber and Ramirez are but there are not too many other household names in that lineup they can build around. Because of that, it makes sense that folks did not feel it would result in a ton of winning in 2022.
As you look at their schedule, one of the main reasons why they are even hovering around the.500 mark is because of their offense. The pitching has not been all that great but they have been able to get good production from their lineup which has helped them win ball games.
When all is said and done, they are going to have to get more production from the rotation and bullpen. If they do not, they will likely have moderate success but it will not be enough to make a true run or be a threat in the AL.
This pitching not being all that strong for them was put on full display in the first game of the series on Friday, as Aaron Civale went 4.2 innings and allowed 6 earned runs. Minnesota ended up beating them by a score of 12-8.
This series with the Twins is certainly a big test for Cleveland. After dropping the first one, they will look to bounce back and get better results for the rest of the series.
The aforementioned Shane Bieber is on the mound for Saturday and he has not been the pitcher we have become used to seeing so far. He is currently 1-2 with an ERA of 4.41.
Minnesota Twins
The Twins might not be getting talked about as much as other teams out there but they have played pretty well so far this season. Overall, I have been impressed with what I have seen out of them.
Based on how they played a season ago, this was a season that had to be much better. 2021 was a total disaster for them on many levels and it would be a very bad look if they repeated that.
I still do not view them as a super talented team, but that does not mean they cannot improve their roster as the year goes on. For them to be true contenders, I feel they would have to go out there and improve their rotation a bit and also get a few hitters to go in that lineup.
As presently constituted, I feel they could get to a certain point but would eventually not get over the hump. You do not always have to have the best players on paper but being able to improve yourself is never a bad thing.
Minnesota currently has a record of 19-14 and they are 1st in the AL. The White Sox and Guardians bost trail them by three games.
This is a year where the Central is certainly not a buzzsaw and it is reasonable to feel that the Twins could win it. I do not see it as the division where it will take 100+ games to get it done.
Sonny Gray went 4.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs in game 1. The bullpen certainly did not do all that great of a job when he left but that did not matter in the final result because of how well their offense played.
Devin Smeltzer will be on the mound on Saturday and he will be making his debut in 2022. It is hard to predict what he will give them but realistically, the expectations cannot be all that high for him.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The total has gone over in 8 of Cleveland’s last 10 games.
- The Guardians are 8-4 SU in their last 12 games.
- The Twins are 14-6 SU in their last 20 games.
- The Twins are 10-3 SU in their last 13 games at home.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Minnesota Twins MLB Prediction:
The Guardians played plenty well on offense in the first game but that was still not enough to get the job done. That will have to be better on Saturday evening.
Shane Bieber has not been himself this year but I do feel he can be better. If he is on his game, this is certainly a lineup he can navigate.
I know the Twins are the favorites here but I really cannot trust Smezlter here. He has not made a start in a while and I am not sold he will be able to contain that Tribe offense.
I like the Guardians at + money here.
