Cleveland Guardians
I have been critical of the Guardians at times this season, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been pleasantly surprised by them in 2022. Going into this season, I really did not expect a ton from them.
As I look at this team, it is very clear they are not overly talented and they do have a lot of work to do on both sides of the field. Those are some of the reasons why I did not feel they would be all that relevant this year.
It might seem weird to say, but this Cleveland team has a chance to win the AL Central. Ultimately, I do not feel it will happen, but it is not as if the White Sox or Twins are some world beaters.
These guys might not have the most talent on the field at the present time, but they sure have a lot of it in the pipeline and the thought is that a lot of their top guys will come to the Majors at once. Because a lot of those guys are not in the big leagues yet, the way that a lot of people view the Guardians is that they are a year ahead of schedule and there is some optimism for the future seasons when they could truly be good.
Given how tight their division is, the Guardians know the importance of head-to-head games within the Central, and I did see some things I liked in their last series with the White Sox. Look, they did not play perfect baseball, but there is nothing wrong with them walking out of Chicago with a split.
After the Tribe took the first two by scores of 8-2 and 7-4, it would have been nice to see them at least get a third win, but they were unable to do so. The offense looked good in the first two games, but they were not as effective in the next two while the bats for the White Sox eventually got going.
Even with a velocity drop, Shane Bieber has mostly been effective this season, but he did not look his best in the loss on Sunday. The right-hander was able to give good length but he gave up 8 hits while allowing 6 earned runs. For a guy who is a strikeout pitcher, he was only able to record 4 of those on Sunday.
It is now time for Zach Plesac to get the ball and I do feel he is better than the 2-7 record might indicate, but he still has been inconsistent this season. In his career, he has proven to be a solid MLB pitcher, but I am not totally sold on the idea of him taking it to the next level. He will be facing a Boston lineup that can be dangerous but has really been struggling and is dealing with some injuries.
Boston Red Sox
For some time now, the Red Sox have been playing about as poorly as a team could play. Dating back to the Yankees series, I kept wondering how they could play any worse the next time out and each time, they figured out ways to do so.
Right now, this is a baseball team that has no direction and no focus. What they have put on display just before the break and immediately after has been embarrassing and there is no reason to believe it will get all that much better.
When you look at how this team has totally spiraled out of control, it makes what they did in June seem like a distant memory. When Boston was rattling off lots of wins in a row and playing good baseball, there was hope this team could amount to something. Now, the word hope should not even be in their vocabulary.
The Sox knew they were going to have a big challenge from a divisional foe right out of the break, but that does not excuse what took place in the three games over the weekend. Yes, the Jays are very talented and yes, the Sox are shorthanded but losing all three games just cannot happen at this point in the season. There were multiple times in which they did not look like a big league team and that is concerning at best.
On Friday, it all started with a disastrous outing by Nate Eovaldi, who clearly does not look like the same guy since coming back. He could not even last 3 innings while allowing 9 earned runs. And that was just the start.
From there, a bunch of relievers also got hit hard and no answers to stop the opposing lineup. All in all, it led to 28 runs scored by Toronto, which is about as bad as it can get for a pitching staff. Although nowhere near as bad as the opener, the remaining two games were not anything great and Boston really had no realistic chance to win either of them despite the scores not being totally out of control.
After getting pounded by the Blue Jays, things do not just get easier for this group with the Guardians coming to town. Sure, they did have success against them back in June, but I would not necessarily count on any of that translating into this four-game set. The Red Sox team right now compared to what they were then should not even be in the same conversation.
Boston will be turning to Nick Pivetta and they desperately need someone on this staff to deliver a strong outing and more importantly, the team has to get a win. The righty was looking like the ace of the staff, but he has really come back down to Earth and has reminded a lot of folks of who he was in Philadelphia.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Guardians are 3-9 in their last 12 road games.
- The Guardians are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. the AL East.
- The Red Sox are 3-13 in their last 16 overall.
- The Red Sox are 7-0 in their last 7 vs. the AL Central.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction:
Boy, the Red Sox could not be playing much worse heading into this series. It is hard to have confidence in a team like this, but I do like them in this spot.
Plesac has proven to be very hittable this season and I think he is a guy the Sox can match up well against. I am not expecting them to totally smoke him, but he is a guy they have hit before and I can see that happening again. Also, the bullpen for Cleveland is just not good and Boston does have the ability to hit mistakes.
Pivetta will still have to be on his game to keep this order in check, but I would feel a lot less confident if he were facing New York, Toronto, Houston, etc. He does have the stuff to keep the Tribe mostly in check.
Give me the Red Sox @ -110.
